  • A woman named Avery Anderson reportedly developed scaly, black lips while battling COVID-19
  • The condition started when she began taking acne medication while down with the coronavirus
  • Anderson decided to share her story on TikTok to shed some light on the bizarre condition

A woman reportedly developed flaky, black lips after getting infected with COVID-19.

Avery Anderson had developed the rare and "horrific" side-effect after taking acne medication while battling the coronavirus disease, Australian news outlet 7NEWS.com.au reported, citing the woman's doctors.

It was unclear if Anderson was vaccinated.

Anderson uploaded a video of herself on social media platform Tiktok earlier this week, where she showed her black lips before going to a hospital. She did not reveal why she was visiting a doctor, but she said, "I'm sure you can guess why I'm going," while showing her scaly and dark lips to the camera.

Anderson later explained in a more recent upload that her acne medication contained supercharged doses of vitamin A, or isotretinoin, which helps close the skin's sebaceous glands.

The medication can typically cause the skin to become a bit dry and flaky, but its severity increased when it was combined with the virus' effects on her lips, according to the 7NEWS.com.au report.

"I'm pretty used to it. I grew up with a lot of skin conditions," she was quoted as saying in the more recent video.

Doctors allegedly told Anderson she had a skin infection — which she identified as Impetigo — caused by Streptococcus bacteria, prompting her to be given a topical treatment. Her lips, however, turned black and became blistered after she applied the cream on the area.

Anderson's low immune system and her acne treatment produced the perfect environment for the condition to develop, she said. She claimed COVID-19 had "manifested" itself in the cracks of her lips.

"When I got sick with the second COVID (Delta), I got strep, a sinus infection, an ear infection, literally the whole works," Anderson said. "It was terrible, I was dying for a while," she added.

Despite her condition, Anderson was still able to make jokes in her videos.

"No, I did not kiss a barbeque grill," Anderson said in response to a comment on her original post where she showed her black lips before visiting a hospital.

Anderson also said she kept "scaring herself" every time she looked at her lips.

She concluded her newest video by asking her viewers and followers to recommend shows she could watch because she won't be leaving her apartment "anytime soon."
