Woman Taking Selfie Falls Into River, Another Woman Jumps To Save Her; Both Dead
Two women in India drowned in a river while taking selfies at a tourist spot. The incident took place in Jabalpur, a city in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, on Friday.
The women, identified as Riddhi Picchadia, 22, and Hansa Soni, 50, were taking selfies while standing on a rock when the latter lost balance and fell into the river. Picchadia, her would-be daughter-in-law, jumped in to save her but both women drowned due to strong water current.
"The Soni family, a resident[sic] of Mumbai, had come to visit Bheraghat. They were staying in a nearby hotel. On Friday evening, they decided to visit the new Bheraghat. The woman, Hansa Soni and her to-be daughter-in-law Riddhi Picchadia were taking selfies while standing on a rock. Hansa lost her control and fell into the Narmada river. Ridhi jumped in to save her. Both of them washed away in the strong current," police said in a statement, Hindustan Times reported.
While a team of divers managed to fish out the 50-year-old woman’s body a few hours later, Picchadia’s body was found the following morning, The Free Press Journal reported.
"During a search with the help of local swimmers, the body of Hansa Soni was found late on Friday evening while the body of Riddhi was found on Saturday," police said.
An autopsy was conducted following which the bodies were handed over to the family. Cops registered a case to investigate the deaths.
This is not the first time people have died while clicking selfies. Last month, three people in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu were washed away while trying to take selfies in a river. Leonsingh Raja, 38, his daughter, Percy, 16 and nephew, Livingston, 19, were part of a 20-member group returning home from a church visit. Despite people being banned from venturing into the Palar River, some members of the group went to the waterbody to take selfies.
