An Oklahoma woman has been accused of tossing a puppy at a police officer while being arrested on a report of animal abuse.

The officers from Mingo Valley responded to a report of a woman abusing a puppy while walking in Tulsa on New Year's Eve. Witnesses reportedly saw the woman kicking and dragging a small puppy and followed the suspect who was later identified as Sarah Powell. Powell reportedly threatened the witnesses while they tried to stop her from abusing the puppy, KOCO News reported.

When the responding officer arrived at the scene, he tried to talk to Powell about the complaint and attempted to stop her. However, Powell reportedly turned argumentative and flung the puppy at the police officer before attempting to flee, the report said.

Meanwhile, the backing officers arrived at the scene and eventually took Powell into custody. "Fortunately, the officer caught the puppy," Tulsa Police Department said in a news release Monday.

"The puppy suffered some minor injuries, including some scrapes and cuts on his feet and stomach. The puppy was placed with the City of Tulsa Animal Welfare for treatment and care," the news release said.

Powell has been arrested on charges including cruelty to animals after a former conviction of a felony, obstruction/interference with an officer, and threatening a violent act.

Police said the witnesses on the scene have expressed their willingness to adopt the puppy.

In November, a 19-year-old California man was jailed after he filmed himself fatally torturing a puppy and posting the gruesome video of the incident on Snapchat. Angel Ramos Corrales of the Eastside district of Riverside was sentenced to two years for assaulting his 4-month-old Chihuahua puppy named Canelo on Feb. 13. Canelo suffered severe chest fractures in the abuse and had to be euthanized to avoid a painful death.

Corrales was arrested after neighbors identified him from the video depicting the brutal assault and reported it to police. He pleaded guilty to the charge of crushing animals, which meant intentionally exposing them to violent abuse and significantly injuring them.
