Woman's Throat Slit By Son, His Friend Who She Caught Stealing
A Texas woman was killed by her teen son and his friend after she caught them stealing from her home Tuesday.
The body of 53-year-old Mary Dempsey was found by her daughter in her San Antonio home Tuesday morning. While entering the home, the daughter noticed that Mary’s car was missing and the home was “completely ransacked.” As she entered the living room, she saw something covered with a blanket. She “stepped closer to the blanket and saw it was covering a person and saw a pool of blood,” an arrest affidavit stated.
The daughter then called 911 and the first responders arrived at the home and pronounced her dead.
"A canvass was conducted and information was obtained that two males were seen leaving the victim's home,” Detective Lawrence Saiz said, My San Antonio reported.
Officers then began to suspect Mary’s son, 18-year-old Matthew Dempsey, and arrived at his mobile home, where bloodied clothes were found in a garbage bag. A while later, Matthew arrived at his mobile home along with his girlfriend. Police took them into custody and questioned them, during which Matthew confessed to the crime.
Matthew told police that he along with a friend, Daniel Saucedo, went to his mother’s home Monday night. They entered the home using a duplicate key and began "gathering items they were going to take from the home.” Matthew had a loaded gun at that time.
As they prepared to leave with all the things, Mary returned home and switched on the lights. Matthew attacked her with a bat from behind and his friend too joined in. They then got a knife from the kitchen and slit Mary’s throat. Matthew then handed over some duct tape to Saucedo to bind the woman after which they covered her with a blanket. The suspects then loaded the stolen items into Mary’s car and drove to a nearby ATM where they withdrew money.
After charging Matthew with first-degree murder, officers obtained an arrest warrant for Saucedo on the same charge, who was later arrested. Both of them were held at the Bexar County Jail on $1 million bail each.
As the news of Mary’s death spread, many people took to social media to express disbelief.
“Yesterday, many of us lost a great friend. She was there whenever we called, texted, or needed help. She loved what she did and her kids were her world,” a friend wrote on Facebook, the San Antonio Express-News reported.
