KEY POINTS

  • "Wonder Woman 1984" is coming on theaters on Dec. 25
  • The new release date of Gal Gadot's superhero film might delay "Dune"
  • "Dune" could be postponed to 2021 to avoid clashing with "Wonder Woman 1984," a report said

Gal Gadot's "Wonder Woman 1984" has been pushed back for the third time, and its new release date might affect "Dune."

"Wonder Woman 1984" is not coming next month anymore. Instead, it will arrive in theaters on Christmas Day.

"Patty Jenkins is an exceptional filmmaker and with 'Wonder Woman 1984' she has delivered an incredibly dynamic film that moviegoers of all ages around the world will absolutely love," Warner Bros Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich said in a statement to Deadline. "We’re very proud of the film and look forward to bringing it to audiences for the holidays."

Director Patty Jenkins is not bothered by the delay. In fact, she is excited that "Wonder Woman 1984" will be part of the holidays.

"First and foremost let me say how much Gal and I love all our devoted Wonder Woman fans around the world, and your excitement for WW84 couldn’t make us happier or more eager for you to see the movie," she said.

"Because I know how important it is to bring this movie to you on a big screen when all of us can share the experience together, I’m hopeful you won’t mind waiting just a little bit longer," Jenkins continued. "With the new date on Christmas Day, we can’t wait to spend the holidays with you!"

"Wonder Woman 1984" was initially set to premiere on June 5 but was pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was then given an Aug. 14 release date but was moved to Oct. 2 and now to Dec. 25.

However, its new release date means that it will hit theaters a week after Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi epic "Dune," which is set to premiere on Dec. 18. According to Variety, the film starring Timothee Chalamet, Oscar Isaac and Zendaya could be postponed to 2021 to avoid clashing with "Wonder Woman 1984" as both films are from Warner Bros.

Prior to the announcement of the new release date of "Wonder Woman 1984," there were already rumors that the superhero film would be pushed back to avoid clashing with "Tenet," a $200 million-budget film from the same studio.

Warner Bros. wants to make more money from "Tenet," which has cleared $150 million globally to date, and delaying Gadot's movie will remove the competition, Variety noted.

The outlet also noted that when the "Dune" trailer was dropped earlier this week, it did not show the film's release date.

Meanwhile, Kristen Wiig's Cheetah transformation was recently unveiled in the "Wonder Woman 1984" trailer released during DC Comics' FanDome event.
