'Wonders Coming Out Of His Foot,' Real Valladolid's Midfielder Says As Lionel Messi Clinches Yet Another Landmark
FC Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde said he had "run out of words" after Lionel Messi clinched yet another landmark as Barca thrashed Real Valladolid 5-1 on Tuesday.
Messi netted a brace, including his 50th career free-kick, and helped his side return on the top of La Liga's points table. The other goals were scored by Clement Lenglet, Arturo Vidal and Luis Suarez as Barca recorded their seventh straight win in all the competitions.
Barca boss heaped praise on his skipper as he said, "What else can be said about him? I’ve run out of words. We always know that he will appear, whatever the match His talent isn’t comparable to anything, the reality is that every time he touches the ball, something special happens. I just don’t know what to say."
"It wasn’t an excessive match, but I think we played well. We’re in a week of three matches and it was important to start it well. We have a big squad and all the players are fighting to play. There are players who deserve to play but can’t always do so. We will be managing the group," Valverde told media in the post-match interview.
Meanwhile, Real Valladolid's midfielder Michel also joined the Messi-praising club. "There were wonders coming out of his foot. You can only applaud and enjoy it," the 31-year-old said.
The first of Messi's 50 free-kick goals came in Nov. 2008 in a league game against Atlético Madrid at Camp Nou. That was just the start of a beautiful free kick extravaganza that has led him to a total of 44 for Barcelona and as many as six for his national football team, Argentina.
Messi's Barcelona will next play against Levante on Saturday before their home Champions League match against Slavia Prague. With two wins and a draw, Barca are on the top of their group in Champions League, which also includes the likes of Dortmund and Inter Milan.
