Newspaper and websites in the United Kingdom were awash in anguish and recrimination Friday in the wake of England's stunning exit from group play at the 2014 World Cup.

Costa Rica’s 1-0 victory over Italy on Friday, coupled with England’s losses in its first two matches, eliminated Wayne Rooney and his teammates from the possibility of advancing to the tournament’s knockout stage.
