The Atlanta Braves completed an improbable title run by defeating the Houston Astros in Game 6 of the 2021 World Series on Tuesday, clinching their first championship in 26 years.

Given all the obstacles the Braves had to overcome to become MLB’s top team in 2021, the odds are stacked against Atlanta to successfully repeat.

The Braves are not favored to win the 2022 World Series. Atlanta isn’t even one of the four teams with 10/1 odds or better at DraftKings Sportsbook for next year’s Fall Classic.

The Los Angeles Dodgers lead the way with 5/1 odds. L.A. was the World Series favorite throughout the season, following their 2020 championship run. The Braves upset the Dodgers in six games in the NLCS.

Houston is second in baseball and first in the American League with 7/1 odds to win the next World Series. The Astros have made five straight trips to the ALCS and three World Series appearances during that stretch.

The New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox are among the top four contenders with 9/1 and 10/1 odds, respectively. The Yankees were eliminated by the Boston Red Sox in the AL Wild-Card Game. The White Sox lost to the Astros in the ALDS.

Atlanta is fifth with 12/1 title odds. The Braves have won four straight NL East championships, though this year’s division title proved to be their most difficult.

The Braves spent most of the regular season with a losing record, climbing above .500 for the first time on Aug. 6. Atlanta’s 88 wins are tied for the fewest of any World Series champion in the last 15 years, excluding last year's COVID-shortened season. The Braves started all three of their playoff series as underdogs.

Adding four outfielders at the trade deadline ultimately turned Atlanta’s season around and propelled the Braves to their first championship since 1995. World Series MVP Jorge Soler and NLCS MVP Eddie Rosario didn’t join the roster until July 30. Trade additions Adam Duvall and Joc Pederson hit three postseason home runs apiece.

No World Series champion has successfully repeated since the New York Yankees won the title each year from 1998-2000. The Philadelphia Phillies were the last champion to even win the pennant the next year, following up their 2008 title with a trip to the 2009 World Series.

The Toronto Blue Jays (13/1), San Diego Padres (14/1), San Francisco Giants (15/1), Tampa Bay Rays (16/1), Boston Red Sox (16/1), New York Mets (18/1) and Milwaukee Brewers (18/1) all have better than 20/1 championship odds.
