World's New Youngest Mother: A 10-Year-Old Colombian Tribal Girl Gives Birth To Daughter, Doctors Shocked And Concerned
A Colombian tribal girl stunned doctors when she gave birth to a healthy 51/2-lbs baby last week at the young age of ten, becoming one of the youngest mothers in history.
According to a Primer Impacto report, the 39-weeks pregnant girl arrived in tears at a local hospital profusely bleeding and in enormous pain. The doctors had to do an urgent caesarean section on the young girl, who apparently had never visited a hospital for any medical advice during the pregnancy.
The unnamed 10-year-old mother is a member of the indigenous Wayuu tribe, from Manaure, a town in the Colombian Department of La Guajira.
Well, she is not the first young girl to get pregnant from Wayuu tribe. It is striking that already (there) have been several cases (of pregnancy) in the girls of the Wayuu ethnicity, Efraín Pacheco Casadiego, the director of the hospital, noted in a report issued by the hospital where the girl gave birth, RCN Radio news site reported.
He said, In reality, (the girls) should be playing with dolls (at this age)... It's shocking that they go to have to handle a baby.
Pre-teen pregnancy is already a heated topic of debate for a very long time and this case has sparked outrage among experts all round the world.
Doctors are concerned that even though a girl can get pregnant as soon as she attains puberty or starts menstruating, her body is not mature and prepared enough to go through the entire nine-month-long meticulous phase of child birth and the post-delivery complications.
The baby's head needs to come through a bony outlet. But in a young girl, the pelvis may not be ready or big enough to deliver a baby, Dr. Kimberly Gecsi, Gynecologist at UH Case Medical Center in Cleveland, told ABC News.
These girls are not ready to be pregnant, said Dr. Fredrick Gonzalez, a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at NYU Langone Medical Center, in reference to the aftermaths of pre-teen pregnancies on the mother and the child.
Gonzalez told ABC News that young mothers are at a higher risk of preeclampsia, pregnancy-induced high blood pressure and their babies are also at risk for fetal growth restriction.
The fact of the matter is that this young girl, like other pre-teen mothers, does not know much about pregnancy, motherhood and has hardly ever visited any doctor for medical concerns. In fact, according to reports, she doesn't want to breastfeed the newborn.
Also, very petite and hearsay information has been reported about the child's father as apparently the members of their community have kept mum about the identity of the anonymous man who impregnated the young girl. Some reports have said him to be a 15-year-old teenager, other claims him to be a 30-year-old man.
The indigenous tribes in Colombia are allowed to maintain their own dominion and hence the police are facing several hurdles prosecuting the child's father for underage sex, Daily Mail has reported.
In Colombia, getting an authorized abortion is very intricate, hence most cases are illegal and unwanted pregnancies are common.
According to NY Daily News, last year, two Mexican girls aged between 10 to 11 years had to give birth after the local Justice Department denied them abortion.
Since it's a Wayuu girl we are trying to respect all of their rights since they have autonomy and their own jurisdiction, Alejandro Samplayo, the director of Instituto Colombiano de Bienestar Familiar, said.
According to reports, both mother and daughter are doing well and have been kept in the neonatal intensive care unit of the hospital.
