A 16-year-old boy is being charged as an adult for allegedly shooting his stepfather in Washington County, Pennsylvania.
The stepfather drove himself to the hospital and underwent life-saving surgery.
The incident took place while the teen and his stepfather were near a Waffle House restaurant in South Strabane, WTAE-TV Pittsburgh reported.
The boy, identified as Samuel Hoy, is accused of shooting his stepfather, Joshua Daniels, several times in his abdomen and legs.
Police arrived at the scene after receiving reports about shots being fired Monday at around 1 a.m. near the intersection of Murtland Avenue and Oak Road, South Strabane Police Chief Drew Hilk said.
Responding offers reported a car speeding away from the scene and a person fleeing on foot, officials said.
The teenager was soon found by cops behind a business in Oak Springs Plaza, according to WPXI. A Springfield 9mm pistol, which was stolen and loaded, was found by officials in the front pocket of the teenager's pants.
Investigators discovered the gun found on the teenager was reported stolen to the Washington City Police Department on Dec. 7. The gun's owner reportedly told the police at the time that the weapon was stolen by someone from his vehicle.
Cops also learned that the wounded stepfather had driven himself to Washington Hospital after being shot in his stomach and leg. He was later transferred to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital by helicopter, TribLIVE reported.
In the surgery the stepfather underwent, parts of his small intestine and colon were removed.
When Hoy was later questioned about the shooting incident in the presence of his mother, he admitted to shooting the man when they were on Spring Road near the entrance to the Washington Mall, officials said.
The teenager was charged with felony counts of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, receiving stolen property and possession of a firearm by a minor. Court records showed that he was being held on a $2 million cash bond at the Washington County jail.
Officials did not reveal a motive behind the shooting.
It was reported that Hoy and Daniels reside in a suburban home with their family just a few miles away from where the shooting occurred.
"It's the worst time," said Terri Flippin, a resident in the area, told CBS News after hearing about the shooting. "This is supposed to be joyous right now, not people hurting each other."
