WWE News: Former Head Writer Urges Jeff Hardy To Retire From Wrestling
KEY POINTS
- Vince Russo believes that it is about time for Jeff Hardy to fully retire from the wrestling business
- Prior to his release, Hardy inexplicably walked out of his December 4 house show match
- Details are yet to emerge on what is happening to the beloved WWE superstar behind the scenes
Jeff Hardy was released last week from WWE due to yet to be revealed circumstances, and former writer Vince Russo wishes that the wrestler would call it quits on his career.
In an exclusive conversation with Sportskeeda Wrestling’s Dr. Chris Featherstone, Russo offered his thoughts on why it may be the time for Hardy to hang up the boots for good.
“If you’re still in that environment, you’re still working hurt, you’ve got to get to that next town, you’re away from your family, you’re lonely, you’re depressed... forget about it. The odds are so stacked against you that I really hope this is a situation of, ‘Stop everything, I am putting everything on freeze, and I am going to take care of myself,’” Russo told Featherstone.
It was reported last week by Andrew Zarian of the Mat Men Pro Wrestling Podcast that Hardy was dealing with some personal problems, without fully disclosing what they were.
Hardy’s release from WWE came after a house show incident on December 4, where “The Charismatic Enigma” inexplicably walked out of a six-man tag team match involving him, Drew McIntyre and King Woods going up against the Bloodline.
WWE then sent Hardy home from the tour the following day.
Hardy’s well-documented history with substance abuse and subsequent redemption has endeared him to the fans and become an inspiration to those who have dealt with the same problems that he has.
Being a polarizing figure in the business himself, Russo understands the difficulty of life on the road with hundreds and hundreds of shows happening throughout the year may have played a part in the December 4 incident.
Russo later commented that Hardy will not be able to fully recover if he keeps on wrestling.
“You’re not going to fix your issues staying in the business. It [is not going to] happen, bro. Being on the road, then you’re in that hotel room alone and you’re missing your loved ones and you’re missing your family. You’re not going to get well while you’re still in the business,” Russo said.
At this point, no one truly knows what Hardy’s situation is as and the best that everyone is working with is the hypothesis that Hardy is aware that his body is starting to fail him after years of highlight-reel-worthy moments that included jumping off of high places and onto his opponents.
Pro wrestling fans and performers have since expressed their love and support for Hardy after his release.
