  • Owens decided to stay with WWE, citing his family as his reason for the choice

WWE superstar Kevin Owens has revealed his desire to compete for the tag team titles in the near future alongside longtime friend Sami Zayn.

Speaking with the French podcast "Les anti-pods de la lute," Owens said he was open to the idea of forming a tag team with Zayn within the WWE, but he is also cautious when it comes to chasing that dream.

“I’d like to win the tag team titles with Sami [Zayn]. I mean, Sami and I winning the tag belts, that must be written in the stars. I don’t see how it couldn’t happen if we are both with WWE. But it’s been six years now, and it had not happened yet, so I guess it might not be happening,” Owens told the podcast, as quoted by WrestlingInc.com.

Zayn and Owens’ history dates back to their time on the independent wrestling circuit, squaring up against each other in a triple threat match that involved Carl Ouellet at International Wrestling Syndicate’s tentpole event “Blood, Sweat and Beers” in 2003.

The two have since been featured in multiple matches across their indie wrestling careers, before both performers were scooped up by the WWE to become the main attractions of the company's developmental brand, NXT.

Zayn, then wrestling under a mask as the character El Generico, and Owens captured the tag team titles in 2008 with top-tier indie promotion Ring of Honor (ROH).

In the past weeks, Owens’ WWE future was put in jeopardy as his contract was set to expire soon, which meant that he could jump ship to rival pro wrestling promotion AEW as soon as he wanted.

But at 37 years old, the former WWE Universal champion was cognizant of the fact that he has already achieved so much at this point in his career that staying in WWE was the most logical move for his family.

Zayn, who is the same age as Owens, has also been rumored to be signing his extension with the WWE soon, which opens up the possibility of them going after either the SmackDown or Raw tag team titles.

Owens also revealed that his current goal is to help up-and-coming stars reach their potential within the wrestling industry.

“I have a huge sense of accomplishment when I see other people working hard and who deserve to be recognized for their passion or their talent, to see it happening. I think it’s really cool,” added Owens.
