WWE News: Roman Reigns' Five-Year Streak Breaks, Ends 2019 On Disappointing Note
KEY POINTS
- Roman Reigns did not win a title in 2019
- Reigns had won at least one title every year since 2014
- Reigns is expected to win 2020 Royal Rumble men's match
Roman Reigns, who is easily one of the biggest superstars to have ever participated in the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), stuck to that image even in 2019.
After being away from the WWE Company for a few months due to an illness, Roman Reigns returned to the setup last year in April. Even though he was away for some time, that did not hit his popularity as he continued to be one of the most prominent superstars in 2019.
Since 2014, Roman Reigns had won at least one title in each of the calendar years. His five-year streak, unfortunately, broke in 2019 when he finished the year with a single championship to his name.
Giving his poor run in 2019 more perspective, Roman Reigns not only failed to win gold but also fought in just one title match that came in October when he faced off against Shinsuke Nakamura for the Intercontinental Championship on WWE SmackDown. Even though the four-time WrestleMania title holder defeated Nakamura through disqualification, Roman Reigns was not given a rematch.
When the Big Dog returned to action after a four-month break due to leukemia, in no time he got busy with the WWE storyline. He defeated Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania 35 before getting involved in a conflict with Shane McMahon, McIntyre and Elias, which persisted for almost the whole of summer.
Ever since his storyline of ‘Whodunnit’ with Daniel Bryan and Erick Rowan ended, Roman Reigns has been in rivalry with King Corbin, Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode on SmackDown.
Even though he did not win any title in 2019, Roman Reigns is expected to return to winning ways as he is being considered one of the favorites to win the 2020 men’s Royal Rumble match.
Earlier, former champion Kevin Owens hailed Roman Reigns as he said that he has massive respect for the Big Dog and he usually blocks any fan, who targets his colleague and baby faced Roman Reigns on social media.
“One guy who gets dragged through the mud a lot is Roman, and I have a tremendous amount of respect for Roman. So, a lot of times I would see people say terrible things about him or his family, and then I would look and see that those people were following me. I'm like, I don't want these people to have access to me,” Owens added.
The 35-year-old WWE star went on to reveal that once he was once tagged in a tweet where a fan expressed how he hoped that The Young Bucks, a tag team in the WWE, broke their neck. The same fan then bumped into Owens at an airport and asked the wrestler for an autograph, to which he said no.
