WWE Rumors: New Storyline For Drew McIntyre Includes Feud With Authority Figure
KEY POINTS
- Drew McIntyre is rumored to be involved in another authority figure storyline
- McIntyre was not included in the Black Friday Invitational Battle Royal for the right to vie for Universal Title
- WWE tends to rehash the authority figure storyline
It seems that WWE is once again rehashing one of its most-used storylines with Drew McIntyre.
In an episode of the Wrestling Observer Radio, renowned pro wrestling insider Dave Meltzer revealed that the company is planning to bring back the abusive authority figures and plug in McIntyre as the superstar that they are trying to hold back.
“So the key stuff is that obviously, Brock Lesnar is back next week. And they’re doing a new gimmick where the authority figures are trying to screw with Drew McIntyre, which is an entirely new storyline that WWE has never done before. But again, you know what’s what they’re doing. They’re repeating the stuff from the past. I mean, that’s what we’re seeing everywhere,” Meltzer reported.
Meltzer was obviously very sarcastic about the “entirely new storyline” comment, and it is representative of how WWE fans are about to receive this new plot for McIntyre.
Prior to the November 26 episode of SmackDown, WWE announced that it would be having a Black Friday Invitational Battle Royal to identify Roman Reigns’ next challenger for the WWE Universal Championship.
Fans were led to believe that the former WWE Champion would easily be the No. 1 contender due to his star power, but it would not be the case.
McIntyre spoke with both SmackDown officials Sonya Deville and Adam Pearce in a backstage segment, asking them to include him in the official list of participants.
However, his name was left off the list.
McIntyre took matters into his own hands by rushing to the ring prior to the match and swinging his sword causing the WWE superstars to duck for cover outside of the ring.
After the commercial break, the broadcast team announced that McIntyre left the ring on his own, allowing the match to officially get underway, which Sami Zayn won.
Going in this direction for a superstar like McIntyre makes little sense as it works best for underdog superstars like Daniel Bryan back in 2014.
WWE does seem to enjoy its authority figures storyline, but fans can only hope that the promotion can make something out of it with McIntyre in order to build something interesting moving forward.
