KEY POINTS

  • Goldberg is set to return to the ring against Bray Wyatt
  • He has suffered a quite number of pay per view losses in the past few years
  • It's rumored that he will pick up the win against Bray Wyatt in Super ShowDown

The matchup of Goldberg and Bray Wyatt is set to happen in the international pay per view Super ShowDown in Saudi Arabia. In the recent episode of Friday Night Smackdown, Goldberg announced his intention to challenge for the WWE Universal Championship. Bray Wyatt interrupted his announcement midway and proceeded with his Firefly Fun house segment. It ended with Goldberg exclaiming his signature line “you’re next!” to Wyatt.

The matchup between the two can set up a potential win for Goldberg. Given that Goldberg should be seen as an unstoppable icon in the wrestling world, he is expected to come up with a victory against The Fiend.

His previous pay per view appearances has ended in a disappointing manner. His previous championship run was ended with a clean loss against Brock Lesnar in Wrestlemania 33. Goldberg is known to be a dominant force in the wrestling industry that he hasn’t seen many losses in his career. If they did happen then it would usually come due to interference or controversy. His clean loss against Brock Lesnar definitely puts it as a staple loss in his career.

A more recent loss of Goldberg was in the 2019 Saudi Arabia Super ShowDown where he lost against The Undertaker. Goldberg suffered an injury early on the match causing a sloppy finish.

This stretch of losses for the former WCW Champion should translate to a win in the eventual matchup against Bray Wyatt. According to Dave Meltzer by way of Ringside News, giving the Universal Championship to Goldberg is a way to maintain his dominant status. “You gotta protect him and he’s gotta be Bill Goldberg.”

This puts WWE in a predicament on whether they will choose to go with Goldberg or Bray Wyatt as the champion coming into Wrestlemania. Roman Reigns could be a potential challenger to whoever holds the title in April. Goldberg definitely has the appeal to bring in more money for the company but Bray Wyatt has been receiving a massive push. His Firefly Fun House angle has been one of the best storylines for the company as Bray Wyatt continues to be the current dominant force in SmackDown.
