WWE SummerSlam 2013: Match Card, Predictions For PPV, Including John Cena Vs. Daniel Bryan And Brock Lesnar Vs. CM Punk
SummerSlam is the second-biggest WWE Pay-Per-View event. The 2013 edition, though, has the potential to be the best of the year when it gets underway this Sunday night.
The buildup for the WWE title matchup feels like it could be the main event of WrestleMania. John Cena, the biggest WWE superstar of the past decade, will face Daniel Bryan, who is currently the most popular wrestler in the company. On the most recent edition of “Monday Night Raw,” the two exchanged top notch promos in what could be the start of a long rivalry.
While Bryan and Cena are fighting for the championship, they aren’t the only two superstars involved in this feud. With Triple H being named the special guest referee, the COO’s recent disagreements with Vince McMahon could come to a head in the main event. Randy Orton is lurking with his Money in the Bank contract, and has a good chance to get involved, as well.
It probably won’t close the show and there is no title on the line, but the fight between CM Punk and Brock Lesnar is as anticipated as any WWE match of 2013. Paul Heyman’s involvement has made this one of the best feuds in recent years.
The entire card features eight matches, including three with a championship on the line and one with a stipulation. A ninth match featuring Mark Henry and The Big Show challenging Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns for the Tag Team titles could be added on SmackDown.
Below are predictions for every match at SummerSlam 2013. The PPV is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. ET in Los Angeles.
WWE Champion John Cena vs. Daniel Bryan (Triple H Special Guest Referee)
Cena has been the driving force of the WWE for years, but Bryan may very well be the next face of the company. Winning the title will solidify Bryan as a top superstar, so there’s a good chance he’ll make Cena tap out. However, Bryan might have a hard time leaving the PPV with the belt. Look for Orton to cash-in his contract, possibly, with the help of Vince McMahon.
Prediction: Daniel Bryan
CM Punk vs. Brock Lesnar
With Punk getting the upper hand on Monday, Lesnar may seem like he’s in line to get the victory. A win for Lesnar, though, would likely mean a rematch between the two, but that isn’t likely with the former UFC champion’s sporadic work schedule. Lesnar will probably be dominant for much of the match, but Punk will get the win. Don’t be surprised in Heyman gets hit with a GTS at some point.
Prediction: CM Punk
World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio vs. Christian
Del Rio has been in the middle of the WWE and World Heavyweight title pictures for much of the past two years, but he’s had a difficult time getting over with the fans. His latest run hasn’t been much better, and a fan favorite like Christian could be in line to win the belt.
Prediction: Christian
Kane vs. Bray Wyatt (Ring of Fire Match)
It seems inevitable that Kane will turn to the dark side and join the Wyatt family. If he’s not with Daniel Bryan anymore, it makes much more sense for him to lose on Sunday and then turn heel.
Prediction: Bray Wyatt
Cody Rhodes vs. Damien Sandow
Rhodes has gotten the upper hand for the majority of the past few weeks, destroying his former tag team partner’s briefcase and contributing to his most recent loss on “Raw.” Rhodes needs the win more, but a controversial victory from Sandow could be cause for a rematch at the next PPV.
Prediction: Damien Sandow
Dolph Ziggler & Kaitlyn vs. Big E Langston & Divas Champion AJ Lee
Langston has yet to win a PPV match in his short-lived WWE career and that trend will likely continue. Ziggler could be on his way to becoming a top babyface, and a loss would only stall his progress. Kaitlyn should get a measure of revenge after losing to AJ on back-to-back PPV’s.
Prediction: Dolph Ziggler & Kaitlyn
Natalya vs. Brie Bella
The WWE wants to keep the Bella twins looking strong. It would be a surprise if they don’t win with Twin Trickery. Eva Marie could also get involved as she watches from ringside.
Prediction: Brie Bella
United States Champion Dean Ambrose vs. Rob Van Dam (Kickoff Match)
It might be a while before any member of The Shield loses at a PPV. RVD is one of the most over wrestler on the active roster and can afford a loss on the pre-show.
Prediction: Dean Ambrose
