One of arguably the greatest performers in WWE history, the Undertaker has called it a career. The Phenom announced that there is nothing else for him to prove as he announced his retirement from wrestling. Amidst the emotional tributes, there are also those who poked fun at the possibility of a return match.
Ever since debuting in 1990, the Undertaker was seen as the terrorizing figure that dominated the WWE for decades to come. The unique gimmick of a supernatural figure wrestling within the boundaries of the ring was a huge hit as it was one of the main reasons for the company’s success. Throughout his career, the Undertaker was able to accomplish several world titles and tallied the greatest WrestleMania record in history.
Major events have become synonymous to the Undertaker such as his 25-2 record at WrestleMania. In the last moment of his career, the Undertaker suited up against AJ Styles in the first-ever Boneyard Match. The Phenomenal One took the honor of being the final opponent of the Deadman.
While it has been an emotional run for everyone given Undertaker’s influence on the industry, several people have pointed out that this was long coming. It was evident in WWE Network’s documentary “The Last Ride” that Undertaker was already struggling with several injuries throughout the past few years but persevered care of the dedication Mark Calaway has for his character.
This resulted in part-time appearances and hyped Saudi Arabia matches. There were several moments that The Undertaker returned to the ring in front of a big market. The 2018 Crown Jewels pay per view featured a retired Shawn Michaels team up with Triple H against Kane and Undertaker. While they were major names, they were all beyond their prime.
In the succeeding year, Undertaker once again suited up for another matchup in front of the Saudi Arabia crowd to face Goldberg. The match was large on paper but it did not live up to the expectations. The lack of chemistry and ring rust of Goldberg was evident and resulted in certain botches and awkward hits.
Fans took to Twitter to joke around about the possibility that despite Undertaker enjoying his retirement, he may be called to make an appearance on the ring.
Despite all of these jokes, there is still no question that the influence of the Undertaker was immense and would go down as one of the best to ever perform for the WWE.
