KEY POINTS

  • All Elite Wrestling is slowly gaining ground over WWE
  • WWE remains the most popular professional wrestling promotion, but maybe not for long
  • WWE fans are fed up with the company bringing in old wrestlers to face younger talent

Professional wrestling is creeping back into the consciousness of fans who have stopped following the sport due to the many changes that happened over this past year.

WWE continues to garner headlines for the wrong reasons after they started releasing superstars left and right in the name of reported budget cuts.

All Elite Wrestling (AEW), on the other hand, is starting to take some of WWE’s spotlight as the company gave its released superstars a home and the exposure that they deserve.

When the promotion announced CM Punk’s debut on AEW Rampage a couple of weeks ago, it seemed as if the writing was on the wall for WWE’s rinse-and-repeat formula of storylines.

Guys like Goldberg and Brock Lesnar were brought in and were featured heavily during WWE SummerSlam 2021, and it was the former who received most of the disapproval from wrestling fans.

WWE fans and critics alike disapproved of the company continuing to feature Goldberg as they believe that his spot should have been given to other performers who would be carrying the organization into the future.

Many have thought that Goldberg was finally done after losing to Bobby Lashley during SummerSlam, but in this YouTube video, the storyline with the current WWE Champion appears to continue.

Goldberg is 54 years old and his wrestling acumen has been severely impaired over the years, highlighted in his match with The Undertaker at the 2019 Super ShowDown event held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where he suffered a concussion.

WWE is reportedly reverting back to focusing on talent that wrestles in the “WWE style”.

It simply means that they want to go back to the days of the Golden and Attitude Eras where big men who used power moves reigned supreme.

This move does not bode well for WWE as rival promotions like AEW, Impact Wrestling and New Japan Pro Wrestling are willing to play ball with each other and cross-promote their talent as they build their brands in a mutually beneficial manner.

This rumored decision also seems to be the final nail in the coffin for Adam Cole’s time with the promotion as his spot on the main roster could be compromised due to turbulence with the upper management.

Cole remains a free agent, and there are no reports yet of where he will go.

But there are rumors that he is jumping ship to AEW, courtesy of a subtle hint from CM Punk and Cole himself.

WWE’s inability to let go of the past has already hamstrung its future, and it will continue to do so if the company does not adapt to the current times.

AEW is far from attaining the global reach that WWE has, but with its current trajectory, it is highly likely that the promotion can reach those heights in the next few years.
