KEY POINTS
- The highly-anticipated "X-Men" spinoff "The New Mutants" has finally gotten a new release date
- The movie will now release on Aug. 28, later this year
- The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, and Alice Braga in pivotal roles
After being delayed four times since 2018, the much-awaited “X-Men” spinoff called “The New Mutants” has finally gotten a new release date. The movie’s release date was pushed back due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film will now be hitting the theaters on Aug. 28, later this year. The movie was initially scheduled to hit theaters in 2018, before being delayed to February 2019, to avoid a clash with “Deadpool,” and then to August 2019, to avoid “Dark Phoenix.”
“The New Mutants” was slated to release on April 3, 2020, but Disney changed its entire movie calendar due to the global health crisis.
The superhero flick tells the story of five young mutants – Wolfsbane, Magik, Cannonball, Mirage, and Sunspot – as they discover their abilities while being held in a secret facility against their will. The youngsters get together to save themselves and run from the facility to start a new life.
“Game Of Thrones” star Maisie Williams plays Wolfsbane while Anya Taylor-Joy portrays Magik. “Stranger Things” star Charlie Heaton is playing the character of Cannonball.
In a recent interview with Collider, Taylor-Joy shared that she has seen the final cut of the movie and she cannot wait for the world to see it because it is really good. The “Split” actress further stated that the movie felt like an “imaginary friend” that no one believes in.
“I have seen the final cut of the movie. This is really nice because Josh Boone is really happy with it, and it was just nice to get the gang together again. It felt like this imaginary friend that you keep telling people is real, but people have not seen it yet,” Taylor-Joy said.
“The New Mutants” is an important film for Disney because the last two films in the “X-Men” universe have been complete failures. Apart from “Deadpool 2,” the recent movies like “X-Men: Apocalypse” (2016) and “Dark Phoenix” did not get good reviews from the critics as well as the audiences.
“Dark Phoenix” (2019) only secured $252 million globally even though it had a production budget of $200 million. The movie was nominated for two Razzies but did not win either of them.
Directed by Boone, the upcoming film also stars Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, and Henry Zaga in pivotal roles.
