You Can Now Buy A COVID Test On Amazon And At These 4 Retailers
Amazon (AMZN) is the latest retailer to begin offering an at-home COVID testing kit online, following in the steps of several other companies.
The e-commerce giant sells the DxTerity COVID-19 Saliva at-Home Collection Kit for $110 each, or 10 kits for $1,000.
The COVID testing kit is authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for emergency use for people that have coronavirus symptoms or are asymptomatic. It uses a “non-invasive” saliva test that is self-administered at home.
Once a saliva sample is taken, it is sent in a prepaid express shipping package to a DxTerity testing laboratory. Results of the test are provided within 24 to 72 hours of receipt to the lab.
Official test results are provided online and can be downloaded for proof of results , but because it is “unsupervised” results may not be accepted as valid for all travel purposes.
The accuracy of the COVID-19 test was not provided on the Amazon website.
Online sales of Amazon’s at-home COVID test joins several other retailers that also offer kits for testing of the virus that have been authorized by the FDA.
Costco sells a saliva PCR test kit from AZOVA on its website that retails for $129.99 to $139.99, depending on model. The test results are provided through a lab order from AZOVA once the test is shipped. Results are provided in 12 to 48 hours of receipt of the saliva sample.
Costco’s website said the AZOVA PCR test has a 98% sensitivity rate to correctly detect COVID-19 and a 99% sensitivity rate to correctly detect someone not infected with the virus.
Walmart and Sam’s Club sell the MyLab Box COVID-19 test kits priced at $99 to $135, depending on model. The test kit uses an RT-PCR test that collects saliva, which is mailed to a lab for testing. The test provides results in 24 to 48 hours within receipt of the sample at the lab.
Accuracy of the Walmart and Sam’s Club test was not provided on the retailers’ websites.
GNC also sells an at-home COVID test kit that costs $129 under the GNC4U name. The test is sent to GNC’s lab partner RUCDR infinite Biologics for testing, and results are provided within 72 hours of receipt of the saliva sample.
GNC said its GNC4U COVID-19 tests have a 99% accuracy rate.
Shares of Amazon were trading at $3,154.35 as of 9:41 a.m. EST, down $64.16 or 1.99%.
