Young Mom Throws Infant In Trash Can After Giving Birth In Hospital Bathroom
A 19-year-old woman allegedly threw her newborn baby in the trash can of a New Mexico hospital.
Alexee Trevizo was arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence after a months-long investigation in Artesia, police said.
Trevizo visited the Artesia General Hospital emergency room on Jan. 27 complaining of back pains. Doctors confirmed that she was pregnant and in labor, the Kansas City Star reported.
The teen then locked herself up in the hospital bathroom for a long time and gave birth to a baby boy, officers said. The young mother put the newborn inside a garbage bag, tied him up and hid him underneath the trash in the bin.
The hospital staff found blood in the bathroom and initially thought Trevizo was having pregnancy-related issues. They gave her the required medical attention.
The newborn baby boy was already dead by the time he was found. A housekeeper alerted two nurses after seeing a large blood spill in the bathroom and finding the trash bag heavier than usual.
After the baby was found, investigators determined that the infant was born alive at about 38 weeks and died shortly after birth. It is possible the baby died as he couldn't breathe while being trapped inside the trash bag.
Trevizo initially claimed her son was not breathing when she gave birth to him. She said the baby was not crying and she put him in the trash bag because she did not know what to do.
The baby's death was ruled a homicide in March following autopsy results.
"Artesia Police Department detectives presented case information to the 5th Judicial District Attorney's Office on March 28, 2023," police said in a statement. "A criminal complaint was approved on May 10, 2023, and formal charges were filed on the suspect, and mother of the victim, identified as Alexee J. Trevizo (19 yoa)."
Trevizo appeared in court Thursday. A hearing for pretrial detention will take place Friday, reported NBC-affiliated KOB reported.
