YouTube Star Jake Paul Challenges UFC Top Fighters Into Boxing Match
KEY POINTS
- YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul dreams of fighting Askren, Masvidal or McGregor
- These UFC stars are unlikely to take up Paul for now
- McGregor and Masvidal are linked to more lucrative deals with Pacquiao and Alvarez respectively
Internet personality Jake Paul made a living on the video-streaming platform YouTube, but he is likewise known for taking huge risks.
His actions of taking it to the extreme have led to him being embroiled in a lot of controversies--one of which is lacing up a pair of eight-ounce boxing gloves. The 23-year-old is now scratching the surface of the mixed martial arts (MMA) scene, something that he may or may not live to regret.
After successfully debuting in the squared-circle last January against fellow YouTuber AnEsonGib, Paul will try to show everyone that it was no fluke. He is set to face former NBA player Nate Robinson on the undercard of the Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr. exhibition fight on Nov. 28.
There is no telling how well he will fare against Robinson in what appears to be a legit fight. Some may play with the notion of both following a script.
Though that could be in play, the scenario is expected to change entirely once the event goes down a few weeks from now.
Regardless, Paul is looking beyond Robinson and is pushing himself against other legit fighters. That list includes UFC top stars such as Ben Askren, Jorge Masvidal and Conor McGregor.
“I want to prove to people that I’m a legitimate boxer, a legitimate professional boxer with skill and someone that people should be scared of,” he said. “I have knockout power, I’m dangerous, and to me, that’s super important and again. That’s just going to take multiple fights to prove that.”
However, there are things to consider with the three names he mentioned.
Askren is already retired and there is no word of a potential return happening soon. Masvidal has been linked to a possible fight with Mexican pugilist Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, while McGregor has been tied to a fight with Filipino fistic sensation Manny Pacquiao in 2021.
McGregor is set to take on Dustin Poirier this coming January, something that many see as a warm-up fight before his boxing bout with the "Pac-Man."
As for Paul, the only way he can land any big fights if he continues to prove himself and draw in good numbers. A hefty prize purse will surely entice any of the aforementioned MMA luminaries to square off with him, so the 23-year-old may want to consider that first.
