  • The male reporter asked Psaki why Biden supports abortion when his Catholic faith says otherwise
  • Psaki has been accused of “sexism” for appearing to target the reporter’s gender
  • The U.S. Supreme Court this week decided not to block a Texas law banning most abortions after 6 weeks

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki shut down a male reporter who questioned President Joe Biden’s support for abortion during a media briefing Thursday.

At the briefing, EWTN Global Catholic Network’s Owen Jensen asked Psaki why Biden supports abortion even as “his own Catholic faith teaches that abortion is morally wrong,” USA Today reported. After Psaki said the president believes abortion is “a woman’s right,” Jensen persisted, asking who Biden thinks should “look out for the unborn child?”

“I know you’ve never faced those choices,” Psaki shot back, adding that “for women out there who have faced those choices, this is an incredibly difficult thing. The president believes that right should be respected.”

As Jensen tried to ask another question, Psaki moved on to other reporters, telling the reporter: "I think we've got to move on. You have had plenty of time today."

Psaki’s exchange with the reporter comes a day after the U.S. Supreme Court decided it will not block a Texas law that prohibits most abortion procedures after six weeks of pregnancy. The Texas law has become the most restrictive abortion measure in the U.S.

Many women do not know they are pregnant after six weeks of pregnancy.

On Thursday, Biden said the Supreme Court’s move of allowing the law to stand will result in “unconstitutional chaos” as it infringes on women’s rights. He warned that the decision “empowers self-anointed enforcers to have devastating impacts.”

Psaki has since come in for severe criticism for the exchange, with the press secretary being accused of appearing to target the male reporter’s gender in her defense of Biden’s abortion stance.

Speaking with Fox News, Students for Life president Kristan Hawkins said based on Psaki’s comments, the president also “shouldn’t be commenting on abortion either as he’s never been pregnant.” Hawkins also said Psaki’s defense hinted at “sexism.” And Penny Young-Nance, the CEO of Concerned Women for America, said Psaki “excels at changing the subject” whenever Biden’s “hypocrisy comes to light.”

Lila Rose of non-profit, anti-abortion group Live Action tagged Psaki in her Twitter post, noting that “being a woman or being pregnant does not give you license to kill.”

Biden said the White House will discuss measures with the Department of Justice as well as the Department of Health and Human Services on how the government should respond to the law.
