Michael Jordan and longtime girlfriend, Yvette Prieto, have finally tied the knot after the Bobcats owner was spotted last month applying for a marriage license.
Jordan’s manager, Estee Portnoy, told the Associated Press the 50-year-old Hall of Fame NBA star married Prieto, 35, over the weekend in Palm Beach, Fla.
Prieto’s bridesmaids wore light lilac dresses for the wedding ceremony held at the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea. More than 300 people attended, including Tiger Woods, Spike Lee and Patrick Ewing. Entertainment included DJ MC Lyte, K’Jon, Robin Thicke, Usher and the Source.
The reception was held at a private golf club, Bear’s Club in Jupiter, that was designed by Jack Nicklaus. Jordan, an avid golfer, owns a home nearby in Palm Beach. Local realtors Jeff and Cary Lichtenstein said the 40,000 square foot tent where Jordan and Prieto’s ceremony was held is the “largest tent in wedding history,” the Huffington Post reported.
“I calculated a total under-roof space of about 600 feet long by 150 feet wide,” a worker at the event told the Miami Herald. “I’ve never seen anything like it. I’ve been working weddings for a while. It looks like he’s having about 2,000 people over.”
The bride wore a French silk voile corset gown by J’Aton Couture with handmade silk designed custom for her and Swarvoski crystals. Guests watched as fireworks exploded in the sky and dined on a seven-layer white rum wedding cake adorned with sugar crystals, crystal brooches and the couple’s monogram on top, AOL reported. Flowers from the ceremony – white roses, peonies and tulips from Mark’s Garden – were donated to the Jupiter Medical Center.
Prieto, a Cuban-American former model for designers such as Alexander Wang, and Jordan started dating in 2008 and became engaged around the Christmas holiday in 2011, his publicist said. The pair have kept a relatively low profile despite living together since 2009 in a gated home in Kendall, Fla. They have only been spotted a few times over the past couple of years, sometimes courtside at Charlotte Bobcats' games, of which, Jordan is an owner.
This marriage will be Jordan’s second. His first wife, Juanita Vanoy, received a $168 million divorce settlement when their 17-year marriage ended in 2006, news accounts said. They have three children, Jeffrey Michael, Marcus James and Jasmine. Prieto has reportedly dated singer Julio Iglesias Jr., the older brother of Enrique Iglesias. In a 2003 interview, Iglesias called Prieto “fantastic,” “loving,” “simple” and “a very good person.”
The legendary Chicago Bulls shooting guard, who wore No. 23, averaged 30.1 points, 6.2 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game. He was also a five-time MVP champion, played in 14 All-Star games and was the top scorer for 10 seasons. He was named Rookie of the Year in 1985 and has won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest twice. Magic Johnson said, “There is Michael Jordan, and then there's the rest of us.”
