Zombie Apocalypse Hits The Campaign Trail For AMC Network
AMC is the home to the acclaimed zombie series "The Walking Dead," which has collected awards from Emmys to AFI awards.
After ad campaigns making veiwers aware that AMC's content is no longer available on satellite provider Dish Network, the network has introduced A. Zombie, an independent presidential candidate.
A. Zombie's platform is simple: get AMC Networks channels AMC, WE tv, IFC and Sundance Channel back on the screens of viewers who use Dish Network, reports the Clicker. The undead presidential hopeful is attempting to get Dish to sign a new deal with AMC Network after the satellite provider that the contract wouldn't be worth the cost.
The network was dropped on June 1, resulting in Dish costumers losing out on shows like "Mad Men," "The Walking Dead," "Breaking Bad" and more. Outside of the primetime programs, viewers are missing out on We's "Braxton Family Values," "Bridezillas" and "My Fair Wedding," IFC's "Portlandia" and "Comedy Bang Bang," among other shows, according to Variety.
Clicker claims that Dave Shull, senior vice president of programming for Dish, said, "HDNet Movies and HDNet are exciting offerings for our customers," The senior VP added, "AMC Networks requires us to carry low-rated channels like IFC and WE to access a few popular AMC shows. The math is simple: It's not a good value for our customers."
A. Zombie's candidacy was announced on Monday in at a "high-energy" event at the Westfield Horton Plaza in San Diego, according to a press release. The plan is for the campaigning dead to travel to Tampa, Fla. and Charlotte, N.C. for the Republican and Democratic National Convention.
The Washington Post notes that "since A. Zombie is a third party candidate he is not invited inside the convention halls." A. Zombies campaign will also be making stops in Dallas, Texas today, Atlanta on Sept 1, and New York City on Sept. 5 according to his official campaign website.
The campaigns site lists A. Zombie's stance on many of the current issues American are facing. In regard to jobs, Zombie says, "I'll strive to increase America's workforce...even if it kills me again."
"I am pro-Zombiecare. Don't be caught dead without it," the candidate claims. He also supports "No Zombie Left Behind," among his other political stances.
AMC has even given their fictitious candidate a wife, Patty, who supports her flesh-eating husband on the campaign trail.
"My husband is someone who has dedicated his life and his afterlife to bringing equal viewing opportunities to all Americans," said Mrs. Zombie in a statement. "He's the right man to lead the fight to bring zombies to everyone in America, and he won't stop -- even if it kills him again."
"A. Zombie's mission is to rally zombie fans around the country who don't have access to these networks and shows to find an alternative television provider before the highly-anticipated third season premiere on October 14, 2012 of A. Zombie's favorite show, AMC's The Walking Dead" claims the press release on the "one-issue" candidate's website. The statement claims that "The Walking Dead" is "the most watched basic cable scripted drama series among DISH subscribers, according to the Nielsen company."
The third season of "The Walking Dead" is set to premiere Oct. 14.
