‘Blindspot’
Jaimie Alexander will reprise her role as Jane Doe for at least another season of “Blindspot.” NBC

“Blindspot” Season 3 has just been officially renewed by NBC!

The shocking announcement came months after viewers speculated on the possibility of the Jaimie Alexander-starrer being axed. Throughout its current season, the ratings for “Blindspot” haven’t been impressive. In fact, the series received its lowest ratings to date with 0.9 during this run. On average, “Blindspot” Season 2 was only able to generate a 1.0 rating from its viewers aged 18 to 49, according to TV Line.

Earlier this year, the publication came up with a poll, asking fans whether or no they want to see “Blindspot” return for a third season. Despite the low ratings, 86 percent of the respondents said that the series should be given another chance by NBC. After all, “Blindspot” was a huge hit when it first premiered on the network in 2015. Months after the show aired its first episode, NBC had already made the decision to renew the series for Season 2.

At the time, NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke expressed her excitement over the success of the new series. “We are over the moon with the success of ‘Blindspot,’ and want to thank our producers and amazing cast for creating one of the most riveting shows on television. Jaimie and Sullivan have done an amazing job of ratcheting up the tension each week in trying to unravel the mystery of Jane’s tattoos. We literally can’t wait to see what the second season will bring,” she said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the renewal for “Blindspot” Season 3 could be the last for the series. In September 2015, executive producer Martin Gero told Variety that he already has a plan in place until Season 3. “There’s a real concrete plan for the first three seasons, and then I have an idea on how to take it past three if we get there. So the crazy thing about pitching these shows nowadays is people have been so burned by an idea that can last 10 episodes. So you really have to – even in the organization of the pitch – come up with an enormous amount of backstory,” he said.

Around the same time, there was a lot of hype for “Blindspot” because viewers were so curious about Jane Doe’s (Alexander) tattoos. The inks on the lead character’s body provided clues in relation to the weekly missions featured in the series. Before Season 2 premiered, Gero said that Jane’s tattoos and the mystery surrounding them will be solved after the premiere episode. When this finally happened, viewers started watching the show less and less. This resulted in the low ratings turnout for the series.

“You could solve it yourself after having seen the pilot. No one has yet. I was like – it’s some sort of prize for the person that can figure it out. I’d be so impressed. But you can piece these together yourself, and so it’s really important for us as a collaboration between the writers, Tinsley and David Kwong, that this all makes sense and it all has a flow to it,” he said.

“Blindspot” Season 2 airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.
