13-Year-Old Rape Victim Ends Life A Day After Delivering Baby At Home

A 13-year-old girl who was reportedly raped and impregnated by an unidentified man has taken her own life only a day after giving birth to a baby.

The unidentified girl from Gandhari, a town in the southern Indian state of Telangana, was found dead in a farm well near her home Wednesday. She had been upset by the humiliation her family had to face because of her pregnancy, The Times of India reported.

The family purportedly learned about the girl's condition just recently.

The investigators believe the girl left her home after her family went out to attend a religious function in the early hours of Wednesday. She reportedly left her baby on the property and jumped into the nearby well, where her body was later recovered.

"The villagers who returned home from the religious event noticed a baby crying on the premises of the girl's house," an investigating officer said as per Latest LY.

No one in the family claimed the baby, so the villagers reported the incident to the police. Officers rushed to the scene and took the infant to a hospital for treatment.

The baby, who was then placed under the care of the Child Welfare Department, remains healthy, police said.

The girl's body was taken out from the well and sent for an autopsy.

Based on the family's complaint, the police have now registered a case against an unknown suspect on charges of child sexual assault and rape.

Child rape has remained a pressing problem in India in recent years. Based on a 2020 report by India Today, 109 children were sexually abused daily in the country in 2018 alone.

Just last month, a 17-year-old girl who was raped and impregnated by an unknown suspect died after giving birth to a stillborn baby in a hospital in India. The unidentified minor from Ahmedabad, a city in the western Indian state of Gujarat, was brought to the hospital by her parents after she complained about severe bleeding and stomach pain. The medical examination revealed the girl was nine months pregnant and was about to deliver a child. Minutes after the delivery, the girl fell into a coma and died.
