16-Year-Old Rape Survivor Arrested For Allegedly Shooting Perpetrator's Mother
A teen girl in India has been arrested for allegedly shooting her rapist's mother, police said.
The incident was reported Saturday in the country's capital city, Delhi after the 50-year-old woman was found injured while she was at her shop. The victim was rushed to a hospital where she is reportedly in stable condition, as reported by Hindustan Times.
The victim's family and the locals soon identified the suspect as the unidentified 16-year-old girl who had earlier filed a complaint against the woman's 25-year-old son for raping her. The teen had fled the scene but was later arrested.
"It has come to the fore that the girl had alleged that she was raped by the woman's son in 2021, after which a case on charges of rape and under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act was registered. The 25-year-old son was then arrested and is still lodged in jail," an investigator privy to the probe said as per the outlet.
Meanwhile, investigators are interrogating the girl to determine the exact motive behind the shooting, as the teen's alleged rapist is already in jail following her complaint.
"The investigation is at a preliminary stage and the motive will become clear once the girl is interrogated at length. We are also speaking to the woman, her family, and the accused's family to ascertain the motive," the officer said.
Police recovered the firearm believed to be used by the teen, as reported by the Times of India. Officials would also be investigating how the girl got the weapon.
In an unrelated incident two months back, a 16-year-old rape victim set herself ablaze after she was forced by her perpetrators to withdraw the case and marry one of them. The two unidentified accused men were out on bail when they reportedly threatened the girl with dire consequences if she did not withdraw her complaint. A few weeks later, the teen used diesel to set herself ablaze. The victim suffered 70% burns and was taken to a hospital where she was fighting for her life, reports said.
