2-Month-Old Baby's Arm Amputated After Father Allegedly Breaks Infant's Limb For Disturbing Sleep
A man in Nigeria has been accused of breaking his 2-month-old baby's arm.
The father allegedly assaulted the infant for disturbing his sleep, local media reports said.
The incident took place in Owerri, which is the capital of Imo State. The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Imo State Chapter and National Human Right Commission (NHRC) have called for the immediate arrest of the accused.
The child's father has been identified as Confidence Amatobi, according to Tribune Online NG. Due to the severity of the assault and delay in getting treatment, the child's fractured arm had to be amputated.
The incident came to light when the child's mother raised a complaint against the father. The child was admitted to the Federal Medical Center, Owerri.
Imo State Chairperson of NAWOJ, Dr Dorothy Nnaji, expressed her shock over the incident, saying the father abused the child just because he was crying. The accused father reportedly hit the baby repeatedly with a plastic object to stop him from crying until his right hand broke.
"Later he locked the mother and baby inside their room to prevent her from talking to neighbors or seeking help. He also took the wife's phone from her. After two days she found her way out and sought help from her neighbors. Later, Mr. Amatobi was arrested by a vigilante group but he escaped. By the time help came, the baby's hand was already decayed. The only option was to cut off baby Miracle's right hand from the shoulder," Nnaji added, according to Within Nigeria.
The exact date of the assault has not been revealed.
It remains unclear what charges will be placed against the accused, who is 31-year-old. The identity of the infant's mother has not been revealed.
Last week, a 28-year-old man was arrested and charged with the death of his girlfriend's 14-month-old child in Mississippi. The suspect, who was the boyfriend of the victim's mother, was taking care of the child when the incident took place. The accused, identified as Trevonte Leshawn Willis, 28, was sent to prison without a bond, and was charged with capital murder. The toddler died from blunt force trauma due to child abuse.
