Two Louisiana sanitation workers, who were on their pickup route Monday morning, turned saviors for a 10-year-old girl who was abducted from a family member's home.
Dion Merrick and Brandon Antoine of Pelican Waste & Debris were on their trash pickup route when they spotted a silver 2012 Nissan Altima in a field, reported ABC News. Merrick grew suspicious of the car as he recognized the vehicle from the statewide AMBER Alert issued Sunday night.
He immediately called 911 and posted a live stream on Facebook, detailing the incident. "Something told me ... I said, what's that car doing off in the field like that?" Merrick said in the video. "I blocked the truck in, [making] sure he couldn’t get out," he added.
The video also showed the suspect, Michael Sereal, 33, being taken in by the police. He is heard shouting, "Why are you doing this to me?" Sereal is an acquaintance of one of the girl's family members.
Jalisa Lasalle had gone missing from the family member's home at New Iberia on Sunday between 1- 2 p.m. (12 p.m. and 1 p.m. ET), said the New Iberia Police Department. The police immediately issued an Amber Alert detailing the car the child was seen getting into, as they believed she was in "imminent danger."
Merrick got emotional after the responding officer praised the men for their actions. "People act like they see stuff, but they don’t want to say nothing. But she’s safe now. Thank God man, because I got a little girl. I’m on my job doing what I got to do,” Merrick said in the video.
"I was just doing my job man. I was just doing my job and actually came across somebody who needed help," Merrick said. "Got me tearing up." The child was evaluated by medical personnel and is safe.
Sereal, a registered sex offender, has been charged with aggravated kidnapping of a child and failure to register as a sex offender. He is currently being held at the Iberia Parish Jail. He is listed on the New Iberia sex offender database for a conviction of carnal knowledge of a juvenile.
Responding to the heroic efforts of his employees, the CEO of Pelican Waste & Debris, Roddie Matherne, said, "We couldn’t be prouder of Dion and Brando. In fact, All of our Pelican Waste team have been heroically working without fail during the pandemic quietly, professionally, and consistently serving the communities where we collect garbage & debris. They often respond in other ways while on the road. This was an exceptional thing that may very well have saved a little girl’s [life]," ABC News reported.
