2017 Unanimous All-American Set To Sign With Detroit Lions After Visit
KEY POINTS
- The Lions signing DeShot Elliott to a one-year deal will shore up their defense
- Elliot's physical condition is expected to be monitored
- The Lions could pick up Ahmad Gardner in the upcoming draft
DeShon Elliot is reportedly set to sign a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions to address their safety needs.
The report came from Mlive.com, a development that comes not long after the 24-year-old met with the Lions on a free-agent visit.
The one-year pact is reportedly worth $3.65 million according to CBS Sports NFL insider Josina Anderson.
The 2017 Unanimous All-American could be a good addition to the Lions, particularly on defense considering they need help at safety.
However, that may all depend on how well Elliott can keep himself healthy.
The Texas native has been hampered by injuries since he entered the league via the Baltimore Ravens in 2018.
Last season, Elliot was limited to just six games due to a biceps and pectoral injury.
In 2019, he also played the same number of games on account of a knee injury. This was on top of his rookie year when he suffered a fractured forearm.
It was only in 2020 that Elliott somehow play more games. He appeared in 16 games for the Ravens, tallying 80 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles.
Elliot also made nine tackles during the Ravens' two postseason games.
Hence, the Lions are hoping that Elliott can find a way to stay healthy. They finished last season with a 3-13-1 record under the watch of Dan Campbell.
Detroit also split its final six games in 2021, registering wins over the Arizona Cardinals and the Green Bay Packers.
Elliott becomes the latest signing of the Lions. Previously, they placed key pieces to their offense when they re-signed receiver, Josh Reynolds.
Moreover, they came to terms with ex-Jaguars receiver D.J. Chark who agreed to a one-year deal.
The Lions are expected to add more players to their lineup as the 2022 NFL Draft draws near.
Detroit owns two first-round picks with the Lions speculated to use one of those to select a cornerback.
In the latest mock draft by Mel Kiper Jr., the ESPN analyst suggested in a report from the Detroit Free Press that the Lions could pick Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner at No. 2.
The 21-year-old is one of the top cornerback prospects in the 2022 NFL Draft, which takes place on April 28 in Las Vegas.
