2018 NFL MVP Odds: Patrick Mahomes Favored Over Gurley, Brees, Brady, Rodgers
As it stands, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the leading favorite to win the 2018 NFL MVP award following Week 7.
Mahomes has been the big talking point of the 2018 NFL season so far, inspiring Kansas to a 6-1 start and 260 points over the first seven weeks — the most in franchise history.
His four touchdown passes in Kansas' massive 45-10 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday sees him lead the league with 22 touchdown passes overall, having notably passed Kurt Warner (21) for the most touchdown passes in any player's first eight games in NFL history.
In addition, he has a quarterback rating of 85.9 while his 2,223 passing yards only rank behind Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan (2,335).
Given his form, it's no surprise to see OddsShark have him as the +150 favorite to win the regular season MVP award. In fact, the 23-year-old's odds even shifted from +200 after his performance in Week 7.
Coming in just behind Mahomes is Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley who has +200 odds.
Gurley, who recently ranked as the fourth best player in the league today according to a dozen longtime NFL scouts, coaches and executives, leads the league in carries (144), rushing yards (686), yards from scrimmage (956) and touchdowns (14).
His performances have undoubtedly played a major role in the Rams remaining unbeaten with their 7-0 record.
New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees meanwhile, comes in at third with +500 odds.
The 39-year-old overtook Peyton Manning as the NFL's all-time passing leader earlier this month and continues to go strong with a 77.3 pass completion percentage this season for the Saints, who are currently 5-1.
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is in fourth place with +1000 odds.
The Packers have struggled this season so far with a 3-2-1 record while Rodgers is not 100 percent yet as he continues his recovery from a left knee problem suffered in Week 1. The 34-year-old is also notably not in the top 10 in touchdown passes or quarterback ratings.
Last year's MVP winner in Tom Brady is fifth with just +1200 odds. Like Rodgers, Brady and the New England Patriots have not been up to their usual standards, although they are currently on a four-match winning streak with a 5-2 record.
Although Brady has 16 touchdown passes, he is also absent from the top 10 in passing yards, but could see his odds shift as the season goes on and the Patriots continue their winning run.
The remaining top 10 are Philip Rivers (+1400), Carson Wentz (+2000), Jared Goff (+2000), Kirk Cousins (+3300) and Ryan (+3300). Rivers of the Los Angeles Chargers was the biggest mover in the odds, going from +2000 to +1400.
The quarterback currently boasts 17 touchdown passes, three interceptions and 2,008 passing yards.
With quarterbacks winning 14 of the last 17 MVP awards, it is likely that it will be the case again this year. That is unless Gurley becomes the first non-quarterback since Adrian Peterson in 2012 to end up winning the award.
