Following a memorable performance at the Coachella festival last weekend, 2NE1 group leader CL has opened up about the surprise reunion of the iconic girl group.
The 31-year-old singer, also known as Lee Chae-Rin, was included in the lineup of 88rising's "Head in the clouds" show at Coachella on Saturday. But instead of taking the stage on her own, CL brought with her fellow South Koreans Sandara Park, Minzy and Park Bom. The trio joined CL to perform the girl group's hit song "I am The Best."
CL shared why she decided to surprise the fans and bring the girls back together for a special musical performance.
"I am grateful and blessed to be alive with pleasure. Long enough to witness the marks I make and things I create blossom," she wrote on her Instagram page Monday.
"The reason I really wanted to invite 2NE1 members to the stage when I agreed to do Coachella is that I hoped I would be able to— that we would be able to — reunite on our own before it’s too late," she added, according to an English translation of her post.
CL revealed what the reunion meant to her, especially after being in the K-pop industry for 13 years.
"By going on that stage, I really wanted to see the people who protected us and stayed with us all these times and thank them for the past 13 years of love and support for 2NE1. That being said, today has been such an important and meaningful day for me of all," she said. "I hope, with the emotions that flowed through us today, that we're able to remember and feel the things that we used to in the past."
She concluded her post by thanking the girls in the group and their fans who have been rooting for a reunion since their disbandment in 2016.
"Again, I am so grateful for my members who shined on stage with me today. I'm grateful to everyone who made such a performance possible. And I'm going to keep going until I get to perform the whole hour on my own," the K-pop idol added.
CL had earlier said she learned about 2NE1's disbandment through news reports while at a thanksgiving dinner.
