Sandara Park revealed she felt confused and “useless” when she learned about 2NE1’s disbandment in 2016.
Park, also known as Dara, appeared on South Korean talk show “Video Star” and opened up about the difficult time she went through after 2NE1 was disbanded seven years after their launch in 2009. The 37-year-old said she felt anxiety surrounding the uncertainty of her future, and that she also doubted herself, wondering if she could perform without Minzy, CL and Park Bom by her side.
“When we disbanded and I had to stand on my own, I suffered great anxiety wondering what I can do by myself. It was the most difficult time for me,” Park said as translated by Koreaboo.
The “Fire” singer went on to admit that she had low self-confidence when she was in the group, revealing that she often felt “useless” as a member and thought that the other 2NE1 members were more talented compared to her.
“When we were together, I thought I was useless to the group because each of my members had such a strong talent. I thought that if I sang more, it was just detrimental to our team. I couldn’t enjoy it,” she said.
Despite their disbandment in 2016, 2NE1 remains one of South Korea’s most successful girl groups ever and is credited as one of the first three K-pop acts who placed hits on Billboard charts along with Wonder Girls and Psy.
The quartet is known for massive hits such as “I am The Best,” “Happy,” “I Don’t Care,” and “Fire.”
Before joining the girl group, Park enjoyed fame in the Philippines following her victory in a local talent search.
Park tearfully said that after the group’s disbandment, she was clueless for two years as far as her career is concerned. She said most of her “friends” when she was a part of 2NE1 stopped reaching out to her.
“After we disbanded, I wondered what I should do from then on. For about two to three years, I had very negative thoughts and my self-confidence dropped a lot. People who used to contact me all the time stopped contacting me at all. I lived those 2 years in darkness.
“But it was good in the end. I realized that the few people I had left next to me were the ones who were truly my friends. So I’m happy these days,” Park said.
Early this month, former 2NE1 leader and main rapper, Lee Chae-Rin or CL said she first found out about the group’s disbandment through news reports, during a Thanksgiving dinner. She described the experience as “heartbreaking.”
Last week, a report disclosed that YG Entertainment gave up on promoting 2NE1 after Minzy left the group.
