3-Year-Old Gets Hit By Mother's Car After Being Dropped Off At Preschool, Dies
A 3-year-old girl was struck by her mother's car right after she was dropped off at her South Carolina preschool. The child succumbed to her injuries.
The tragic incident took place Wednesday as the child's mother was dropping her off at the Covenant Christian Academy in Anderson at around 8 a.m., the Anderson County Coroner's Office said in a news release.
The mother had taken the child out of the vehicle and was beginning to leave the daycare center in the car when the child ran back into the roadway, the Charlotte Observer reported. The girl was struck by the very same car that drove her to the preschool.
Bystanders administered CPR to the child before paramedics arrived at the scene. The girl was rushed to a hospital, but she was pronounced dead at around 8.45 a.m.
Senior Deputy Coroner Brent Simpson said the girl died of a traumatic brain injury secondary to blunt force trauma. The identity of the child was not revealed.
The sheriff's office released a statement following the girl's death.
"We know the Anderson County community is one that is tight-knit and during tragedy can truly come together in strength and prayer," the sheriff's office said in a statement.
"We stand with our neighbors, the members of Covenant Church, as well as their pastor, Dr. Steve Silvey. Covenant Baptist and Covenant Christian Academy are a strong faith-based community," the statement read. "As Christians we are not exempt from trials or tragedies, but when these things occur, we stick together and support one another. We cherish prayers during this difficult time and for all those who are affected."
In a similar incident last year, a mother accidentally ran over her 3-year-old daughter in the driveway of their home in Colorado. The 27-year-old mother was at the wheel trying to reposition the vehicle in the driveway and did not notice that the child had come in the car's way. The girl was pronounced dead at a hospital.
