They’ve been married for eight years and been together for nearly 20, but even the seemingly unshakeable Kate Middleton and Prince William have been the subjects of several rumors over the years. And even while many have been wrong, they have potentially affected the pair over the years.

Here are four misconceptions about the couple that have been shared over the years.

How They Met

It’s commonly believed the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met while they both were students at St. Andrew’s, and their romance did actually bloom there, biographer Katie Nicholl has revealed in the past that she learned the pair had met at an earlier date.

“I was speaking to some of her friends at Marlborough school, which was where she went before St, Andrews,” she told Katie Couric in 2013. “They said, ‘nuh-uh, she didn’t meet him at St. Andrews. She met him before she got there.’ While she was at school in her sixth form, through some of her friends, they knew Prince William and Prince Harry. So there was an early meeting. That, for me, that changed everything.”

They Sleep In Separate Bedrooms

The couple married in 2011 and have had three children together, but some have wondered if the couple’s marriage has seen them live in a more modern existence or if they actually don’t share a bedroom at their home in Kensington Palace—enough for the topic to become part of a discussion on Quora. One user went on to state that those who do know the truth are likely sworn to secrecy, but that there is no real reason to believe the pair are not living the same way as most other modern couples.

“They have shared a house as students. There is no reason to suppose that they would need, or choose to have separate bedrooms as older generations of the royal family have done,” the user wrote.

Prince William Has Been Guilty Of Infidelity

The couple’s marriage (and royal fans worlds) were rocked earlier this year as rumors began to fly which suggested that during her third pregnancy, Prince William cheated on his wife with Rose Hanbury, the Marchioness of Cholmondeley. The rumors were so rampant in fact that they were used in a way that blamed his alleged infidelity on a reported feud with his brother, Prince Harry. However, they were later proven false, and the couple has reportedly grown stronger than ever as a result.

“Kate found the rumors hurtful, obviously, and hates the thought that one day her children will be able to read about them online,” a source previously told Us Weekly. “It forced her and William to sit back and examine their relationship, which they realized they should have been doing more often.”

They Will Succeed The Throne Over Prince Charles

Perhaps the biggest rumor about the couple over the years, stemming likely from their popularity with the public, is that they are set to take the throne following Queen Elizabeth’s death, surpassing his father, Prince Charles, and his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, as the heirs. Earlier this year, reports even went so far as to claim that the Queen had made it so William would become the next King and even ordered Prince Charles to flee Great Britain and settle outside of the U.K.

Those rumors were quickly refuted, not only for being outrageously false but because Queen Elizabeth has already made moves to legally appoint Prince Charles as her successor.
