Ukrainian forces announced this week that they had retaken Trostyanets, a northeastern town that has seen fierce fighting and was occupied by Russians for weeks, from Russian control. Last week, after its advances have stalled on several fronts, Russia appeared to revise its military goals in Ukraine, claiming that it would focus its efforts on the battle in the eastern Donbas region. KEY POINTS

  • The Ukrainian military recorded 450 losses among Russian personnel between Saturday and Sunday
  • Russia also lost 15 tanks, 27 AFVs and 13 artillery systems, among other things, in the same period
  • Most of the losses were in the direction of Donetsk and Kryvyi Rih, based on the latest military report

Russia lost 450 personnel, 15 tanks, 27 armored fighting vehicles (AFV) and 13 artillery systems within one day as the country's casualties in the ongoing invasion of Ukraine neared 50,000, according to data by the Ukrainian military.

Combat losses among Russian personnel between the start of the conflict on Feb. 24 and Sunday numbered 49,500, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said in a casualty report.

Russian losses also included 2,049 tanks, 4,430 AFVs and 1,147 artillery systems, among other pieces of military equipment.

In its previous report that recorded casualties from the beginning of the war until Saturday, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine claimed Russia had lost 49,050 personnel, 2,034 tanks, 4,403 AFVs and 1,134 artillery systems.

Most of Russia's recent losses were in the direction of Donetsk and Kryvyi Rih, according to the Ukrainian military.

Russia's last official death toll from the invasion, released by the country's defense ministry in March, indicated its fatalities numbered 1,351 at the time.

But independent Russian media outlet Mediazona was able to confirm 5,801 Russian military deaths as of Aug. 25.

Russia may have already suffered between 70,000 and 80,000 casualties in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine, U.S. Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Colin Kahl revealed last month.

In contrast, around 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers died in the first 100 days of the invasion, Oleksiy Arestovych, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said in June.

Ukraine launched a counter-offensive last week in a bid to recapture Kherson, the first major city to fall to Russian hands in the war.

Ukrainian officials and sources touted several successes during the early stages of the military operation.

However, Ukraine's military has released little news on the offensive's progress. Meanwhile, Zelensky said no details of the campaign would be made public.

Russia acknowledged Ukraine's counterattack, but it denied reports of Ukrainian military progress.

Ukraine's offensive comes as the U.S. suggested that Russia may now be facing "severe" shortages of military personnel and seeking ways to recruit more service members for its losses in Ukraine.

Russia is also allegedly on track to experience a shortage in munitions by the end of the year.
