6 Biggest Controversies That 'The Kardashians' Season 2 Did Not Cover
KEY POINTS
- "The Kardashians" Season 2 threaded over the family's controversial issues this year
- Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's divorce proceedings were rarely addressed in the season
- The Kardashian family appeared to gloss over the Blac Chyna trial
Hulu's "The Kardashians" concluded its second season late last month. But it left fans underwhelmed because it failed to address the "important topics" and seemed less authentic than "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," which aired on the E! channel.
According to Insider, the sophomore season spanned from February to early July and highlighted most of the family's notable events, including the birth of Kylie Jenner's son with partner Travis Scott, Kim Kardashian and daughter North West attending Paris Fashion Week, Kourtney Kardashian Barker and Travis Barker's wedding preparations, as well as Kim's controversial Met Gala look.
Some fans noticed that the series failed to include other controversial issues, including Kim's divorce from Kanye West. It seemed that the show purposely left out some remarkable public events and barely spoke about the issues on screen.
Below is the list of the 6 biggest controversies and news stories "The Kardashians" Season 2 barely talked about or did not cover at all, according to Insider.
1. Kanye West's social media posts about the custody rights issues over his children with Kim and her then-boyfriend Pete Davidson
The 42-year-old Skims founder briefly mentioned her ex-husband's social media allegation that he wasn't "allowed" to see his children in March in Season 2, episode four of the Hulu series. She debunked the claims on Instagram by commenting on one of the since-deleted posts that he was "just here this morning" to pick up the children for school.
"I don't want to go back and forth on the internet," Kardashian told her sisters, Khloé Kardashian and Kendall Jenner, in the episode, according to Insider.
Although the issues were slightly acknowledged on the show and addressed via social media, it seemed the season threaded over the 45-year-old rapper's complaints about co-parenting with Kim.
It also didn't address West's comments on the "Saturday Night Live" alum Pete Davidson's relationship with his ex. He told his fans to yell "Kimye Forever" at Davidson if they saw hi, in public and releasing a music video with a scene seemingly aimed at Davidson as it showed West burying a cartoon depiction of the 28-year-old comedian alive in March.
2. Kim and West's divorce proceedings
In February 2021, the business mogul filed for divorce from the rapper after six years of marriage. However, earlier this year, West filed a motion opposing his ex-wife's request to be declared legally single while finalizing their divorce.
Insider obtained access to the court documents, which stated that Kim requested to become legally single so that it would terminate her marriage status with West. She also claimed that the "misinformation" in his social media posts had caused "emotional distress."
In March, a judge declared the reality star legally single.
3. Kim and ex-boyfriend Pete Davidson's first red-carpet walk before their Met Gala appearance
Before the annual fundraising gala event held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in May, Kim and Davidson first made their red carpet debut in April while attending the White House Correspondents' Dinner together.
At the time, the business mogul donned a shimmering Balenciaga gown while the comedian opted for a classic black-and-white Prada suit, according to Vogue.
The second season reportedly focused on the exes' Met Gala appearance, and only briefly acknowledged their first red carpet together while in the car on the way to the event and said that it was "exhausting" to attend both prestigious events within the same week.
"I really wanted our first red carpet for me to be in brown hair, and [as] I said, I wanted it to be a non-fashion event," Kim told Davidson. The comedian responded, "Yeah, I wanted us to be getting slimed at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, but to each his own."
4. The Kardashian family rarely got into detail about the Blac Chyna trial
Members of the family, including momager Kris Jenner, mentioned feeling "tired" about the defamation trial and discussed the possible outcomes of the judge's verdict, hoping that the truth would prevail against all odds. However, no photos from the trial were shown, only court illustrations.
Although the Kardashians were seen speaking about the trial before and after the final verdict was released, they rarely detailed what happened and only shared their thoughts on the incident.
Earlier this year, Blac Chyna, whose real name is Angela White, filed a defamation lawsuit against the Kardashians, including Rob, Kim, Khloe, and sister Kylie Jenner for defaming her as "violent and unstable," and allegedly persuading producers and executives of "Rob & Chyna" to cancel the reality show. Chyna sued for $108 million, but the Kardashians, who all testified during the hearing, won the case with the jury deciding that they did not owe the 34-year-old model any damages.
5. Khloe and Barker's ex-partners appeared on "Celebrity Big Brother" while the second season was filming
According to showrunner Danielle King, "The Kardashians" focused more on the main cast's narratives and aimed to "capture what they wanted to share." Hence, the series never dived into Khloe's ex-husband Lamar Odom, who appeared on "Celebrity Big Brother" earlier this year and made multiple comments about reuniting with the 38-year-old Good American founder.
It also did not go out of its way to discuss Kourtney's new husband, Barker, whose ex-wife Shanna Moakler, also appeared on the long-running reality show. She reportedly told Insider in an interview released in February that she was not on speaking terms with the 47-year-old Blink 182 drummer and the 43-year-old Poosh blogger due to "miscommunications." But the former couple agreed to "always" prioritize their children, 23-year-old Atiana De La Hoya, 19-year-old son Landon and 16-year-old daughter Alabama.
6. Kim's "offensive" comments about women in business
In an interview with Variety, released in March, Kim shared an advice for women, saying, "I have the best advice for women in business, get your f--king ass up and work. It seems like nobody wants to work these days. You have to surround yourself with people that wanna work."
It did not receive the reaction Kim expected and instead led to a huge backlash from social media users. Some also claimed that the series purposely cut out part of her statement on the show, including the assertion that "it seems like nobody wants to work these days," and her advice not to deal with toxic working environments when it was mentioned in episode four of the season.
In the same month of the incident, Kim apologized for her comments, telling ABC News that they were "taken out of context."
