6-Month-Old Baby Dies After 'Near Drowning' Incident, Woman Arrested
A 6-month-old baby, who was found unresponsive and unconscious in a house in Sydney, died Thursday.
The police, who had arrived at the scene responding to reports of a concern of welfare, had found the child unresponsive. “Upon arrival, officers attached to Camden Police Area Command found a baby boy, 6 months old, unconscious and unresponsive,” New South Wales Police statement said, according to Brisbane Times.
Initial reports said the baby suffered a “near drowning” incident before becoming unresponsive. It is not yet known how or where the child nearly drowned.
Four ambulance crews and a specialist medical team had arrived at the scene, following which the baby was given CPR before being taken to Campbelltown Hospital, the police said. It remains unclear if there were any injuries on the baby, News.com reported.
The police have launched an investigation into the incident. On Thursday, a woman was arrested in connection to the death of the child. However, the relation between the baby and the woman was not revealed. The unidentified woman has been taken to Camden Police Station.
Earlier this month in Atlanta, a 24-year-old man was arrested in connection with the death of a 2-year-old girl he was babysitting. The mother of the child returned home and found her daughter unresponsive. She immediately alerted the emergency services. "The fire department attempted to revive the child but (was) unsuccessful," Gwinnett police said in a news release at the time. "The child had several bruises on the cheeks with finger and fingernail impressions, a swollen eye, swollen forehead, and bruises on the body." The accused, Kyhree Kennedy, was charged with felony murder and cruelty to children.
Last year in Texas, a woman was charged after her 1-year-old child was found unresponsive in the bathtub. The child was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital and is said to have recovered. The mother of the toddler, identified as 20-year-old Amayrani Martinez, had left the boy and his two-year-old sibling under the care of a 11-year-old girl.
