6-Year-Old Girl Mowed Down, Killed While Crossing Brooklyn Street; Mother Unable To Save Her

A 6-year-old girl was struck and killed by an SUV while she was crossing a Brooklyn, New York street Tuesday night, police sources said.
The unnamed girl was walking through the intersection of 12th Avenue and 67th Street in Dyker Heights at approximately 8:50 p.m. when a Lexus SUV struck her, the New York Daily News reported, citing police. Her mother allegedly attempted to pull her to safety, but she was unable to save her.
"I was trying to console the mother. The little girl was lying by the fire hydrant, blood coming out of her chest. She was covered with blood," 69-year-old Linda Guerin, who lived nearby from where the girl was struck, said.
"The mother kept screaming and screaming and screaming. God help her. I wanted God to save this child, but it would have taken a miracle," she added.
Medical personnel took the victim to Maimonides Medical Center, but she was unable to be saved, according to police.
The driver of the SUV reportedly remained on the scene, and police continued their investigation on the incident on Tuesday night.
It was unknown if charges over the child's death have been filed.
Glenda, a resident of the block who witnessed the incident, said the intersection was really dangerous.
"There's no cameras over here... I'm here 18 years, you know how many accidents there have been here? They drive like maniacs, going through red lights, speeding... I'm sick of this," she said.
A similar incident happened in Virginia over a week ago when a 15-year-old girl was seriously injured after she was hit by a car while crossing the road on the way to school.
Deputies of the Stafford County Sheriff's Office were called to the intersection of Leeland Road and Amherst Avenue shortly past 8:50 a.m. on Aug. 17 over a report of a pedestrian accident.
An investigation revealed that the 15-year-old was trying to cross the road at the intersection to get a ride to school with a friend when she was was hit by a Ford Focus.
The driver of the sedan stopped at the scene and called 911. The teen was then taken to the hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
No charges were reportedly filed over the incident.
