A woman from China was sentenced to 10 years in prison Wednesday for beating her nine-year-old son to death for not doing homework in January 2018.

The unnamed woman violently beat her son for over five hours after she found out he had sneaked out to play without completing his homework. She also found out the boy had lost his phone while playing outside. The victim was found dead at the home the following morning.

According to the court documents, the boy returned home after playing and confessed to losing his phone. The mother-son duo then went out to search for the phone but to no avail. Upon returning home, the woman discovered the son had not completed his homework. In a fit of rage, the woman started violently beating the boy with a wooden rod before tying his legs with a tape and stabbing his feet with a sewing needle. The ordeal went on for five hours during which the boy was given only a few sips of water to drink.

The woman carried the boy to his bedroom when the boy told her he did not want to see her again. She then went to her room to sleep. The following morning, the woman went to the boy’s bedroom and found him lying unconscious on the floor. She immediately called the paramedics who arrived at the home and declared the boy dead. An autopsy revealed the boy died from “hemorrhagic shock combined with pulmonary embolism - a blockage in an artery in the lungs.”

Calling it an “act of intentional injury,” the court sentenced the woman to 10 years in prison.

In a similar incident in February, an eight-year-old boy from central China was beaten and stabbed by his father for not completing his homework on time. Upon finding out the boy had not completed his homework before deadline, the unnamed man ordered his son to kneel before beating him violently. He then stabbed the child with a kitchen knife after the boy’s grandmother intervened. The boy was left with injuries to his head, back and hips post the incident.
