The doctors at a hospital in Dubai have successfully removed a 9.7 pound muscle tumor from the uterus of a woman.

The Dubai Media Office (DMO) reported Monday the woman was 40 years old. The tumor, which was 29 cm long, was believed to be one of the largest uterine growths to have ever been surgically removed in the region. The rare surgery took place in less than three hours, the doctors said.

The tumor was detected after the patient visited Dr. Mohammad Hamad Mohammad in his clinic due to abdominal pain. Tests conducted on the unidentified woman revealed the presence of the large tumor, which reportedly weighed the same as an average 9-month-old fetus, the Siasat reported.

Doctors also excised another 5 cm tumor from the uterus, without causing any harm to the organ. This gave the woman hope to get pregnant in the future. The patient reportedly lost only 250 milliliters of blood during the operation and was said to be recovering.

The woman faced no complications following the surgery, and was under observation, the doctors said. The exact date of the surgery took place was not known.

“The successful surgery is yet another testament to the global standards and world-class capabilities of Dubai’s advanced healthcare sector. We are proud to contribute to realizing the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to establish Dubai as the region’s hub for world-class medical services and treatment,” Marwan Ibrahim Al-Haj Nasser, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tadawi Group, said, according to Khaleej Times.

The medical team involved in the surgery included Dr. Anna Kacarska, obstetrician and gynecologist, Dr. Gautam Lahiri, general surgeon; Dr. Adel Khalil, consultant urologist; and Dr. James Donato, anesthesiologist.

In January, reports surfaced that a 6.6-pound tumor was successfully removed from the liver of a 28-week pregnant woman in India. The surgery took place in the southern state of Telangana. The 24-year-old unidentified woman was taken to a hospital after she complained of a lump and an ache in her stomach. Following tests, it was revealed she had a cancerous tumor in her liver. According to local media, this case was believed to be the first-ever reported incident of primary choriocarcinoma of liver in pregnant women in the Indian population and probably in the world.
