Adrien Broner May Encounter Tough Road Back To Boxing
KEY POINTS
- Adrien Broner may find it difficult to make a comeback after pulling out of a scheduled bout
- Broner is urged to do more to prove he can still fight in the ring
- He is more of a name than a figure at this point, according to a boxing scribe
Adrien Broner was supposed to return to the boxing ring in August but inadvertently pulled out due to alleged mental health issues that he has to deal with.
He was originally set to face Omar Figueroa Jr., who ended up facing Sergey Lipinets instead.
The Kazakh won via eighth-round technical knockout against the American fighter last August 20.
As for Broner, there is no telling when the four-division world champion will return to the ring.
When asked to opine on the future of Broner, Filipino-American analyst Ryan Songalia admitted that it is hard to foresee the 33-year-old back in the ring in an interview with PTV Sports.
"Right now, it's hard to even think of Adrien Broner in the context of getting another big fight because... training camp is arduous. It's mentally and physically taxing. It's very difficult because you are going to fail at some point in the gym and you have to overcome that," Songalia stated.
"If he is not well and he has a series of bad sparring sessions and then anxiety takes over, who knows how that could manifest? So I think that for now, it's hard to see him in a big fight. I'm not a doctor but I hope Broner overcomes these issues," he added.
Songalia went on to point out that the boxing career of Broner took a turn after the Shawn Porter fight in June 2015.
"Broner really is at the tail-end of his career. For more than the past decade, he had been one of the big stars of boxing. I think that particularly after the Shawn Porter fight, he stopped being that. Like you always wonder that when is he going kinda come into his own and understand who he is as a fighter," the boxing scribe singled out.
Songalia also stressed several things that stand in the way should Broner entertain thoughts of making a boxing return.
"I think he is more of a name at this point than he is a figure, a force in the sport. He sort of reminds me of Hector Camacho at this point," he said.
