Hunter and Bobbi left S.H.I.E.L.D. together, but they won’t come back as a duo. In “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 5, episode 5, Hunter will return alone, but that doesn’t mean he has given up on his ex-wife.

Nick Blood, who plays Hunter, previewed the episode, and it doesn’t sound like the two have split up for good. “What I would say is they probably [had] a tiff a few days before,” Blood explained to TVLine. “And this time apart is allowing her to cool off. Now they each have a little bit of time and space to think until the situation calms down. That’s what I imagine.”

When audiences last saw the spies, Bobbi/Mockingbird (Adrianne Palicki) and Hunter were arrested while trying to save the Russian Prime Minister in “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 3. They couldn’t claim they were part of S.H.I.E.L.D. at the time, which wasn’t supposed to exist, so they had to be disavowed. They were never heard from again (mostly because their spinoff didn’t get picked up).

Blood added that it was a little weird to return to “S.H.I.E.L.D.” without Palicki by his side. “Yes, it was quite strange, because they make such a good duo,” he said. “They have a great dynamic together and it would have been really fun to work with Adrianne again, because we get on very well off-screen, we’re good friends and stuff. But Hunter’s got his Bobbi fix, so he’s probably grateful for a little time away from the ex-wife!”

As previously reported, International Business Times asked Palicki in October if she’d like to return. “If they ask me, I would absolutely come back,” Palicki said. “I know Nick’s coming back. So what are they gonna do without Bobbi is all I’m asking. I would absolutely make a cameo. For sure.”

When Hunter returns in episode 5, he’ll show up as Fitz’s (Iain DeCaestecker) lawyer. Audiences also haven’t seen the scientist for some time since he is the only one who was left behind while his teammates were sent to a space station in the future. It seems he has been kept in jail while authorities try to get answers out of him. That’s when Hunter will show up as his legal representation.
