Alec Baldwin: I Still 'Would Love' To Run For NYC Mayor
Alec Baldwin for New York City mayor? Still might happen.
The 30 Rock actor and political and arts activist told Bloomberg TV's Betty Liu on Tuesday that he is still open to the idea of running for mayor one day, despite ruling out a 2013 campaign a few months ago.
I would love to do it because I have had a job that has been very good to me, Baldwin said. I have been very lucky and very successful in a lot of ways, but I would still like to consider [running for mayor] because I do a lot of this kind of work now and I wonder what it would be like if I had a staff and budget to do it.
Baldwin, a Democrat who supports President Barack Obama, spoke to Bloomberg TV from Washington, D.C., where he was lobbying for more support of the arts. He called for an increase in the federal endowment for the arts (it currently stands at $147 million, according to Agence France-Presse) in a speech to the National Press Club on Monday.
But fighting for a cause is just a hobby for the actor, for the time being. His contract playing NBC executive Jack Donaghy ends sometime in 2013 and has one more season remaining on it. Baldwin said the network wasn't sure how long the season is going to be or how long we are going to work.
Right now I am just looking at finishing what is in front of me, Baldwin said. It is something that I would love to do. The only thing that I can suggest is that two years, four years, is an eternity in an American political life. Let's see what things are like in 2014 and maybe I can find some opportunity.
The actor has flirted with the possibility of running for New York City mayor in the past, but put speculation of filling Mayor Michael Bloomberg's shoes was put to rest on his WNYC radio show Here's the Thing in December.
I've lost my appetite, Baldwin said on the show. Plus the people that are running for mayor -- I know this is terrible -- I look at them and I don't see myself in that crowd. They're like a guy on a date that you can tell he just can't wait to get his hand up your blouse before even the lights go out in the theatre.
