All-Female, Mostly White Jury Chosen For Trial Of George Zimmerman In Shooting Of Trayvon Martin
A six-person, all-female jury was chosen Thursday in Florida for the trial of George Zimmerman in the 2012 shooting death of teenager Trayvon Martin, the Associated Press and CNN reported. Five of the six jurors are also white. The four alternates are two men and two women, also all white.
Race is a large factor in the Zimmerman-Martin case. Zimmerman, who is half Hispanic, has maintained that he shot Martin, a young black man, in self-defense during a scuffle late at night.
The six women were chosen from a pool of 500 potential jurors, who were then whittled down to 40.
