Amal Clooney Is Optimistic About The Future For Gender Equality
Nearly 20,000 women met at a conference in Boston, and Amal Clooney was one of the speakers there. Clooney talked about her optimism for the future of gender equality at the event. Most of the other speakers spoke about women empowerment issues and movements like #MeToo.
The 2018 Massachusetts Conference for Women was recently held in Boston. According to a report by ABC, the organizers of the event claimed that the tickets were sold out within minutes. The attendees of the two-day conference reportedly agree that there is a need for more conferences such as this to give women a platform to meet, connect, learn and share ideas.
A diverse group of women from different backgrounds, professions and races gathered for the event. Some men were also reportedly in the crowd.
Women empowerment was the main agenda. The discussions ranged from how to negotiate in the work place to starting something on the side. The attendees asked questions related to sexual harassment at the work place, work pressures and career advancement.
“Eat, Pray, Love,” book author Elizabeth Gilbert was one of the keynote speakers at the event. While talking about the women empowerment issue, the author said that words like “fierce,” “resilient,” and “brave” are not revolutionary because the women she knows and admires are already these things. The word she and a few others at the event wanted to focus on is “relaxed.” She added that women should give just 70 percent effort, which she feels will be enough, and this should give people enough time and space to focus on themselves.
Clooney, on the other hand, said that this is the “defining moment in the fight for gender equality.” She also expressed her optimism about the future of gender equality.
According to People, there was a Q&A session that was hosted by Nick Clooney, who is father to George Clooney and father-in-law to Amal. Nick asked his daughter-in-law about her experience with sexual harassment at the workplace.
Amal confirmed that she has faced some form of sexual harassment in her career. She said that she did encounter some “unwanted,” “inappropriate” and “awkward” advances that she had to deal with. She admitted that she would have felt uncomfortable speaking about the issue back when it happened because other women too were uncomfortable speaking about it. But she added that this has now changed.
Apart from attending events that she is passionate about, Amal also makes time to spend with her husband, George Clooney, and her family. She was spotted with her husband and in-laws at the 23rd Annual United Nations Correspondents Associations (UNCA) Awards in New York City earlier this month, People reported.
