Amber Heard recounted the first time Johnny Depp allegedly "physically hurt" her when she took the stand in the ongoing trial in Virginia.
On Wednesday, Heard testified under oath that Depp physically hurt her. When she took the stand, her lawyer Elaine Bredehoft asked her to share the first time Depp laid a hand on her. Heard said she could "never forget" the incident because "it changed my life."
According to the "Aquaman" star, it happened early on in their relationship when they were having a "normal conversation," and she asked Depp about the tattoo on his arm because it was "hard to read." The "Pirates of the Caribbean" star explained the ink, and she laughed. Her gesture allegedly didn't sit well with Depp.
"It was that simple. I just laughed because I thought he was joking. And he slapped me across the face," Heard said, People reported. "I laughed because I didn't know what else to do. I thought, 'This must be a joke.' ... I didn't know what was going on. I just stared at him, kind of laughing still, thinking he was gonna start laughing too to tell me it was a joke. But he didn't."
Depp allegedly slapped Heard again at the time, and she realized that "it wasn't a joke anymore." The "London Fields" actress said, "I, as a woman, had never been hit like that," so she got stunned because Depp slapped her "for no reason."
When Heard didn't react, Depp allegedly slapped her "one more time, hard." She became emotional, lost her balance and fell to the carpet.
"I wish so much he had said he was joking. 'Cause it didn't hurt; it didn't physically hurt me. ... I didn't want to leave him. I didn't want this to be the reality," she continued. "I didn't want to have the man I was in love with— I know you don't come back from that. I'm not dumb. You can't hit a woman, you can't hit a man. You can't hit anyone."
Depp denied Heard's allegations that he was violent and abusive when they were together. When he took the stand and testified under oath, the "Fantastic Beasts" actor said he was in "complete shock" when he heard about the domestic abuse allegations from his ex-wife.
"Never did I myself reach the point of striking Ms. Heard in any way, nor have I ever struck any woman in my life," Depp was quoted by People as saying. "Since I knew there was no truth to it whatsoever, I felt it my responsibility to stand up not only for myself in that instance but stand up for my children, who at the time were 14 and 16."
Depp is suing Heard for the op-ed she wrote about being a domestic abuse survivor. The actor said that even if his name was not mentioned, the story that allegedly contained "fictitious" claims was "clearly about me," and it ruined his career and reputation.
