Amber Heard recently shared snaps from her trip to Istanbul, Turkey, but one photo she uploaded on Instagram didn't sit well with some netizens.
On Saturday, Heard posted a snap of herself wearing a red headscarf on Instagram, revealing in the caption that she was having a blast touring the Turkish city.
"Spent the day wandering around the magic of Istanbul’s mosques and couldn’t be more in love with this gorgeous city," she wrote.
Heard also posted a series of photos from her Istanbul visit on Instagram Stories, including a view of the city. However, it was the image of the actress smiling and posing inside a mosque that some took offense to as it appeared that her photo also captured a person in the middle of praying.
"That’s a whole new level of disrespect to take a photo like that while someone is praying behind you," one person who shared the photo on Twitter wrote.
"It’s not allowed to make pictures of people during their ablution process inside of the mosque," a Twitter wrote. "Amber Heard pictures a man without his consent when he was praying. Or Amber Turd aka miss 'I am above the rules' thinks that it doesn’t apply for her??"
One Twitter user who claims to Muslim called out Heard for not respecting the people praying in the mosque and accused her of racism. "Let me remind you that she called a dog terrorist and named it after an arabic name. Very respectful," the person wrote, possibly in reference to this clip.
Another netizen criticized the way the "Aquaman" star wore the hijab. "Amber Heard has no respect for religion or race as we’ve seen many times," the Twitter user posted, along with side-by-side images of how Heard and another woman wearing hijabs.
Regarding the proper etiquette when visiting mosques, Bernard O’Kane, a professor of Islamic art and architecture at American University in Cairo, said that cameras are allowed inside but should not be used during certain times.
"Normally no problem, although it is usually discouraged during prayer time," he told The Washington Post.
"You should dress conservatively," he added. "Try not to go in shorts or tank tops. You should maintain decorum inside, so don’t speak or laugh loudly. Other than that, there are very few restrictions."
The Istanbul Insider, which offers tips and advice to tourists visiting the city, also discouraged taking photos of people praying inside mosques, stating: "You can take photos or shoot videos inside the mosque. However, do not point your camera at believers during their ablution process outside the mosque, nor while they are praying inside the mosque. This is unfortunately the least respected of all rules."
Amid the criticism, however, Heard also received praise from some Twitter users.
"Even on holiday, #AmberHeard sends a powerful message. She's in Turkey just as the government is about to vote on withdrawing from the Istanbul Convention (which protects women from DV) Coincidence? I don't think so! Go Amber!" one social media user wrote.
"Welcome to Istanbul amber," another fan said.
