‘American Horror Story: Cult’ Spoilers: Kai’s Past Is Revealed In Episode 5
It’s business as usual in the quiet Michigan suburb, despite the murders happening in the community. On “American Horror Story: Cult,” episode 5, Kai’s group of followers will do anything to make sure their leader reigns supreme, but when one member begins to show their true colors, the group begins to transition into a fragile state that could make or break them.
Check out these 5 things you need to know after “American Horror Story” Season 7, episode 5:
1. Kai And Beverly Create Fear In The Community
As “Holes” begins, Beverly (Adina Porter) recaps all of the violent incidents that have taken place in the community, including an interview with Kai (Evan Peters), who was attacked and accuses the government of poisoning the people and not properly protecting them.
Following her numerous reports spreading fear, Beverly’s Boss, Bob (Dermot Mulroney) confronts her about the crime stories she has been reporting ,seeing as crime it is at the lowest it’s ever been in years. He also tells her that there are holes in her story and she needs to stop reporting on fake news, and giving Kai, who is running for city councilman, airtime.
2. Ivy Is Part Of Kai’s Cult
After Beverly reveals that her boss is starting to catch on to her frequent coverage of Kai, he determines that the group will need to kill Bob in order to continue to make the news. However, this murder must be brutally gruesome in order to capture the public’s attention, and make them terrified enough to put their trust and hope in Kai. Once the decision is made, a dark figure walks in who Kai calls out for being late.
“What did I miss?” Ivy (Alison Pill) asks.
3. Ivy Didn’t Mind Ending Her Relationship WIth Ally.
After taking their son Oz (Cooper Dodson) and ending her relationship with Ally (Sarah Paulson), it is revealed that it was all part of a bigger plan. Ivy left Ally after Oz found a video of her having a sexual encounter with Winter (Billie Lourd).
During a car ride with Winter, Ivy admits that she hates her wife for not helping to make the country a better place, ans says she and will do anything to make sure her son lives in a world where he can be safe.
4. Ivy Participates In A Murder
After murdering Beverly’s boss, the newscaster points out that one of Kai’s cult members, RJ, is a weak link who will bring the rest of the group down. During the murder, the group encountered a gimp in Bob’s attic whose life RJ suggested they spare. After Kai kills the gimp, Ivy runs off and throws up which also was a sign of weakness.
When Kai gathered the group to murder RJ with a nail gun, he made Ivy go first when it came to shooting nails into his head to prove her loyalty. After everyone shot a nail into RJ’s head, the young man was surprisingly still alive, until Kai shot off the final fatal nail in the back of his head, killing him.
5. Kai Shares His Real Story With Beverly
In episode 5, “Holes,” Kai and Beverly’s bond strengthens and she asks him to tell her about his life-- not the story he wants people to believe, but the truth. Kai reveals that his father used to be a lawyer but got into a motorcycle accident that paralyzed him. After that, his father grew bitter and abusive towards his mother until one day, three years ago, she shot his dad and killed herself.
Rather than call the cops, he called his brother Vin (Cheyenne Jackson), who happens to be Ally’s therapist, who suggested that they cover their parents in lye and let them decompose in the bedroom. Vincent was just starting up his private practice and didn’t want to give up any of his parents’ money.
Between their father’s accident settlement, disability checks and their mother’s pension, the siblings would be better off never reporting their deaths. The bodies of Kai’s parents are still locked in their bedroom where he visits them, mostly speaking to his mother and cursing his father.
By the end of his story, Kai is in tears but Beverly is there to comfort him.
“American Horror Story: Cult” airs Tuesday at 10 p.m. EDT on FX.
